This study compared the sodium and potassium levels in three naturally low sodium vegetables (cabbage, potato and squash) cooked in water containing no sodium with vegetables cooked in water with sodium typical of a range of existing water supplies (i.e. 0, 100, and 250 mg/L). In addition, sodium and potassium retention in vegetables as a result of adding salt (NaCl) during the cooking process was tested. The results indicated that sodium levels are markedly increased in a dose‐dependent manner for each vegetable studied, while potassium levels were not consistently affected by the sodium concentration of the cooking water.

In the laboratory, female beet armyworms (BAW) [Spodoptera exigua(Hübner)] first began “calling”; 6 hr into the scotophase. The calling behavior lasted from a few seconds to several minutes and was repeated periodically throughout the dark period. A hexane extract of abdominal tips excised from calling females was attractive to laboratory‐reared males in bioassays conducted in small screenwire cages in the greenhouse and to native males in field trapping trials. Laboratory‐reared and native females were ca. equally attractive to native males in the field. Therefore, the selective laboratory rearing regimen has not unduly influenced the quantity or quality of the BAW pheromone produced by the laboratory strain.

In flame ionization detection of hydrocarbons, the presence of oxygen in the sample gas affects the response of the detector to a given hydrocarbon concentration. A membrane separation technique devised to provide a sample gas relatively free of oxygen has been tested in the present study.

摘要:
Effect of cadmium at concentrations between 0.01 and 1000 μg/ml on growth ofEuglena graciliswas examined in the zinc‐optimum range, in which the maximum growth was obtained. The dose‐response curve relating its growth amount to the concentration of cadmium added to a synthetic medium showed non‐toxic, toxic, and lethal ranges of cadmium concentrations in the medium. In the non‐toxic range(less than 5 μg Cd/ml), the growth amount kept nearly constant without any alteration in cell size, while it decreased with an increased cell size in the toxic range(more than 5 μg Cd/ml). By increasing zinc concentration in medium, the effect of cadmium on the growth amount and cell size was reduced with the resulting decrease in cadmium incorporation into cells.

Eleven compounds associated with sex attractant activity were isolated from femaleSpodoptera exigua(Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and identified as tetradecan‐1‐ol, (Z)‐9‐tetradecen‐l‐ol, (E)‐9‐tetradecen‐l‐ol, (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadien‐l‐ol, (Z,Z)‐9,12‐tetradecadien‐l‐ol, the acetates of these alcohols, and (Z)‐7‐tetradecen‐l‐ol acetate. A mixture of synthetic (Z,E)‐9,12‐tetradecadien‐l‐ol acetate and (Z)‐9‐tetradecen‐l‐ol, in a 5:4 ratio, was equal to live females, to the total hexane wash of females, or to a mixture of all eleven synthetic compounds in attracting wild males in the field.

A method for the determination of personal exposure to hydrogen cyanide is described. Samples are collected by permeation through a silicone membrane into 10 mL 0.1N NaOH. The collected HCN (as CN‐) is converted to a colored product and the resulting solution is measured spectrophoto‐metrically. The HCN exposure (time‐weighted‐average) is then calculated. The detection limit of the method is 0.01 ppm (0.011 μg/m3at 20°C) for an 8 h exposure with a working range of 0.1–50 ppm. The device responds in less than 1 min and is unaffected by variations in humidity. Temperature effects were observed with a maximum error of ± 5% over the normal working range (0–45°C). The only significant interferences observed were from chlorine and cyanogen (‐73.7 and ±21.0% relative error respectively). The effects of the former were reduced to <‐3% with the addition of ascorbic acid to the absorbing solution. A device can be constructed that is small in weight and size and can serve as either an area or personal monitor.

摘要:
Gas Chromatographic analysis of environmental contaminants, such as organochlorine pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. present in trace levels, demands stringent standards of purity of solvents and reagents used. Identification by gas chrotnatography‐mass spectrometry of the impurities found in commercially‐purified hexane, anhydrous sodium sulfate and sodium bicarbonate are presented to show their inadequacies for trace analysis. This paper will also describe methods of purification of hexane, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate and water for ultra‐trace analysis.
