摘要:
A bait made from the grain used to prepare a commercial bottled liquor and later packaged as cattle feed was highly attractive to all instars of the brownbanded cockroach,Supelia longipalpa(F.), a major domiciliary pest that has always been difficult to control. When tested in a trapping experiment, the dry mash attracted 1,160 brownbanded cockroaches, 16 American (Periplaneta americana) and 4 German (Blattella germanica) cockroaches in an 8‐week period compared with 3 German cockroaches trapped in untreated controls. In a second test comparing the mash with ground Lab‐Chow pellets for a 2‐week period, 411 brownbanded cockroaches were trapped compared with 27 cockroaches trapped with the ground dogfood and 9 with the control.

摘要:
Peroxide contamination of organic solvents and related reagents, e.g. vegetable oils, has created potential problems for the toxicologist, biochemist and industrial hygienist. Because of tedious or complicated procedures to test for and remove, or prevent the formation of peroxides, the tendency of laboratory investigators has been to ignore the problem. In this study, straight‐forward procedures for the testing and removal, and/or prevention of formation of peroxides were investigated. Total peroxides were assayed by measuring FeIII(SCN)3formed by FeIIoxidation and reaction with KSCN. Most solvents and reagents, as received from the manufacturer, were found to have low levels of peroxides. After opening the container, peroxides were formed rapidly in many solvents. Techniques for the complete retardation of peroxide formation in fresh solvents or reagents are described. For peroxides already present in organic solvents or vegetable oils, a novel technique for easy removal without Introducing contaminants 1s described.

摘要:
Bromide released in methanolic solutions of ethylenedibromide (5 mM) was measured after six hours at room temperature and 62°C. Bromide release is enhanced (two‐fold at 30°C, relative to a blank) in the presence of a nickel(II) chelate compound, bis (N‐n‐butylsalicylaidiminato)nicke(II). Implications are considered.

Aspartame, a recently marketed dipeptide sweetening agent, was discovered accidentally in 1965. Following extensive research and development, the product was approved for various uses by the FDA in 1974, 1981 and 1983. Aspartame has not been without its critics, however. W.C. Monte of Arizona has repeatedly criticized aspartame on television and in filings with regulatory agencies and the courts, who have uniformly rejected his arguments. In a recent publication in a journal for which he serves as an editor, Monte ignored scientific evidence to the contrary and raised questions about the safety of aspartame. The allegations were directed towards the three metabolic products L‐phenylalanine, L‐aspartic acid, and, particularly, methanol. Responses to Monte1s various principal charges are presented. In addition, Monte recounted the death of a plant worker exposed to aspartame, implying that death had been caused by aspartame‐derived methanol. This misrepresentation of the records is corrected by a full discussion herein of their contents. It is concluded that there is overwhelming scientific evidence showing aspartame to be safe for human use, Monte's charges notwithstanding.

Acid rain has become a significant environmental problem in the United States1,2,3,4. The survival of aquatic life depends on the ability of the aquatic's system to withstand acidic rainwater. This in turn is very dependant on the buffer capacity of the system. Understanding the factors that effect buffer capacity would be very valuable in formulating solutions for the protection of aquatic life.

The roots of tomato plants were fumigated with simulated refuse‐generated gas mixtures at levels of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) previously measured in the atmospheres of landfill cover soils associated with poor growth or death of plants (5). A concentration of 18% CO2or greater, exceeded in almost 30% of thirty‐two landfills examined throughout the United States, caused reduced growth and visible symptoms on tomato after 1 wk, regardless of O2level. Doubling the CO2level to that encountered in a typical local site (Edgeboro Landfill) resulted in more severe symptom development and the subsequent death of plants. Methane, in concentrations of 20% and above, found in more than 25% of the landfills visited, while not observed to be toxicper se; was associated with drastic O2depletion in the soil atmosphere, which activity was believed to be the cause of plant decline.

摘要:
Initial efforts to determine some chemodynamic properties of three phthalate esters (PEs) in soil‐water systems gave erratic results. This behavior can be explained by the occurrence of biodegradation of PEs over time scales encountered in laboratory investigations. Results are presented which demonstrate that biodegradation can be significant in the laboratory and should be controlled.

摘要:
Mass trapping of the Egyptian cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) with its sex pheromone for four consecutive years (1976–1979) has resulted in a 20–45% reduction in treatments against the pest, together with reduction in the number of egg clusters and egg viability in treated fields as compared to control, on vast areas, of thousands of hectares. Mass trapping of the pest in cotton fields in Israel is now part of its integrated control.
