摘要:
During oxidative treatment of water with chlorine or ozone, the bromide present is oxidized to hypobromite. Oxidation to bromate, though thermodynamically possible, occurs with very low rates. Attemps were made to distinguish by experiment between the role of chlorine in oxidation reactions and in substitution reactions. When chlorine and bromine react in combination, it appears that chlorine preferentially acts as an oxidant while bromine reacts more as a halogenating agent. Analogous behavior was observed when ozone is combined with halogens.

摘要:
Bis(2‐chloroethyl)ether (BCEE) has been monitored in two Surveys of the Delaware Estuary and Philadelphia Drinking Water. Survey I was completed with mass‐chromatographic quantitation. Survey II was completed with quantitation by a Hall Detector. The data is interpreted in light of GC/MS confirmation and GC interferences. A pathway for distribution of BCEE in the Delaware Estuary is discussed.

摘要:
The use of 15% ethyl ether/hexane as the extracting solvent for BIS(2‐chloro‐)ethers in aqueous samples is evaluated using the p‐value approach to liquid‐liquid extraction. The evaluation supports the choice of solvent and largely accounts for diminished recovery of the BIS(2‐chloro‐)ethers in terms of losses that occur during solvent enrichment, particularly as affected by nitrogen blow‐down from 8 ml to 1 ml.

摘要:
Experience of a novice in the use of commercial systems for computer assisted interpretation of mass spectra of compounds found in drinking water is presented. Recurring problems in GC/MS analysis of complex mixtures were analyzed by three computer systems: PBM, STIRS, and MSSS. Problems such as the presence of low level impurities, mixtures, quality assurance of reference spectra, and mass spectra which do not match reference spectra in the Registry of Mass Spectral Data are discussed. The performance of each system is discussed to aid the occassional or new user of these systems.

摘要:
The adsorption efficiency of the “Organics—Carbon Adsorbable”; method has been determined, for large grab samples of several different waters, by automated monitoring of the minisampler's influent and effluent for dissolved organic carbon. Average adsorption efficiencies of 80–90% were found for waters with a wide range of dissolved organic carbon content. The low yields of carbon‐chloroform extract obtained by this procedure are attributed to inefficient extraction by chloroform.

摘要:
A demonstration that “second‐order”; chlororganics might, in part, be responsible for the BOD reduction that is observed upon chlorination of wastewater has been hampered by the inability to devise an experiment that is not complicated by other contributing factors. The current study compares the BOD enhancement for parent organic systems (phenols, benzoic acids, and anilines) against the BOD values obtained from those chlororganics known to be produced from the parent during disinfection. The investigation supports the hypothesis that these chlorinated organic materials are not readily degraded during the test period and, therefore, will not provide an appropriate contribution to the overall BOD value that is obtained.

摘要:
As part of the survey of organic compounds in Ontario drinking waters, several aromatic hydrocarbons were identified in the finished water of a water treatment plant. Benzene and alkylbenzenes were quantitated at the parts per trillion level (ng/1) whereas analysis of the raw water failed to show the presence of any aromatic hydrocarbons. Experimental evidence is presented that suggests that relatively high concentration of the aromatics may occasionally contaminate the raw water which enters the water treatment plant. These aromatics are initially adsorbed on the filter media, and gradually released into the finished water.
