摘要:
The untreated scrubber water from the Char Oil Energy Development coal liquefaction process was examined for pernicious effects on the protozoanTetrahymena pyriformis. Cells were exposed to varying concentrations of process water; their behavior, oxygen uptake, and population growth were monitored. Reduction in cell number and motility are directly related to both concentration and length of exposure with concentrations up to 5% and exposures up to 24 hr. The product water causes a nonlinear, dose‐dependent reduction in oxygen uptake over a 2 to 5% concentration range. Population growth is reduced by concentrations as low as 0.2% process water. Both the growth rate and the final density of the test populations are inversely related to concentration over the range of 0.2 to 1%. Comparisons with the coal gasification product water are discussed.

摘要:
An outbreak of red tide (Gymnodinium breve)during September 1978 resulted in a mass mortality of the following invertebrates on Sarasota, Florida beaches:spisula solidissima similis,. Donax variabilis; Emerita talpoida;andLibinia dubia.The invertebrate kill was most probably due to the effects of the toxic dinoflagel‐late rather than other factors such as low dissolved oxygen.

摘要:
Thiosulfate and thiocyanate were found to be important solutes in four waste waters derived from combustion type in situ processing of oil shale. Thiosulfate, thiocyanate, tetra‐thionate, sulfite, sulfate and total sulfur concentrations were determined, and the predominant sulfur species in all waste‐water samples was thiosulfate, ranging from 420 to 2,200 mg/L. Thio‐cyanate levels ranged from 24 to 730 mg/L. Hydrogen sulfide has been reported in gases derived from the retorting of oil shale, but sulfide was not detected in any of the waters studied.

摘要:
Evidence of a new type of secondary poll utants in photochemical smog, dinitrates, has been presented. Propylene glycol 1,2‐dinitrate (PGDN) was identified as a product in the photooxidation of a propylene‐nitrogen oxides‐air system using an evacuable and bakable smog chamber. The concentrations of the products were measured quantitativelyin‐situby a long‐path Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The yield of PGDN was about 0.10 ppm when the mixture of 3.0 ppm of C3H6 and about 1.5 ppm of NOXwas irradiated in air. The yield of PGDN was nearly the same for both the dry and humidified air system.

摘要:
Although atmospheric metal levels vary throughout the city of Glasgow, the mean values are in good agreement with those reported for other centres. Enrichment factors do not however vary much for Al, Cr, Mn and Fe, but show some variation in Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu and Zn. These findings suggest that there is a blanket of trace metals in the atmosphere produced by the burning of fossil fuels, on top of which is superimposed levels of Cd, Pb, Ni, Cu and Zn from additional industrial sources.

摘要:
The comparative toxicity of sodium selenate to five fungal genera isolated from natural systems was studied. Both strain and generic differences in the growth of fungi were noted when sodium selenate was added to sulfur supplemented medium. The production of dimethyselenide gas (DMSe) by these mycoflora did not strictly correlate with their relative toxicities to inorganic selenium.

摘要:
A methyl‐Pt compound formed by incubating K2PtCl6with methylcobalamin (MeB‐12) is further characterized with respect to its chloride content, its Pt oxidation state, and its electro‐phoretic mobility. The complexed chloride has been determined from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the Cl displaced by competing thiocyanate (SCN ) anions. Release of 3 chlorides per Pt combined with a Me/Pt ratio of 1.0 indicates a metal coordination number of 4. This is in agreement with X‐ray photoelectron spectra (ESCA) which show that the majority of the Me‐Pt product contains Pt in the +2 valence state. Based on this data and the anionic nature of the product at pHs from 2.5–7.5 it 2‐is presently represented as MePtCl3.
