Polluted river water, river bottom sediment, fish body slime, fish gastrointestinal tracts and fresh water mussel gastrointestinal tracts were examined forSalmonella. Eleven serotypes were found among 131 Isolates.S.amsterdamwas the predominatingSalmonellaspp., and was obtained from all specimens. Two serotypes,giveandsenftenberg. were found only in the fish gastrointestinal tracts. Salmonellae may colonize in fish and serve as an indicator system for current as well as retrospective evidence of fecal pollution of the aquatic environment.

Field‐grown lettuce was exposedin‐situto a facsimile geothermal gas mixture (15 CO2: 1 H2S: 1 CH4: 2 N2parts by volume added to air). The objective was to determine the effects of geothermal air pollution on photosynthesis and stomatal diffusion resistance during a three‐hour period of exposure. The question was to what degree the extra CO2might compensate for the phytotoxic effect of H2S during an exposure analogous to fumigation by a typical geothermal power plant plume.

An improved isolation procedure for a cytolytic material ("aponin") from the blue green alga,Gomphosphaeria aponinais described. The cytolytic activity of aponin towardG.breve, an unarmored dinofiagellate associated with Florida red tides, was assayed. Cytolytic activity of the crude aponin showed no change following incubation for one hour at various temperatures over the range 30–110°C. Aponin was acid stable, and base labile, on the basis of incubation at 30°C in distilled water at definite pH for 48 hours prior to bioassay withG.breve. In sea water, the cytolytic activity remained constant for 1–10 days, following which the cytolytic activity decreased. Preliminary purification was effected using silica gel chromatography, followed by permeation gel chromatography (Sephadex LH‐20).

The use of porous polymers to separate water soluble organic pollutants by gas chromatography was investigated. Chromosorb 105 showed some interesting properties with acetic acid solutions of varying concentrations. Chromosorb 104 proved effective in the separation of methanol, acetaldehyde, hexafluoroacetone, and acetic acid. Headspace analysis and extraction with 1,2‐dichloroethane proved of little value. Absorption of these compounds in distilled water with a midget impinger proved impractical since these compounds were removed upon aeration.

Samples of American Petroleum Institute clays kaolinite #4, montmorillonite #20 and illite #35 were treated with. 8 different trace metal extraction procedures. X‐ray diffraction patterns of oriented samples of the clays were prepared before and after sample treatment. After treatment, the extraction fluids were separated from the clay residue and analyzed for Si, Al, Fe, Mn, and Zn. The percentage of an element extracted varied dramatically with the element, procedure and mineral. Relatively little Si was extracted from the clays by the procedures employed, but Al extraction varied from 0 to 66% of the Al present. Fe extraction varied from .2 to 69%,Mn extraction from 0 to 100%, and Zn extraction from .5 to 69%. The high percentage of Al extracted by acid and acid‐peroxide treatment suggests that considerable destruction of the clay mineral structure had occurred. Clay structure disruption was also indicated by changes in the peak height/ width ratio before and after sample treatment. The relatively large amounts of trace metals extracted by pyrophosphate solution, without influencing the x‐ray diffraction patterns for the minerals, suggest that environmental scientists should consider this method as a means of trace element extraction.

The effect of relative humidity on keeping quality of onions (Allium cepacv. Downing Yellow Globe) was investigated as an alternative to the application of growth inhibitor, maleic hydrazide. Eleven months after storage at 40% or lower relative humidity and 3±1 °C temperature about 70 to 81% of the onions remained in good marketing quality and 80 to 97% in good eating quality. Data presented show that a considerable potential exists for successful storage of onions without the use of maleic hydrazide.

Gymnodinium breveDavis, the Florida red tide organism, was obtained in unialgal culture and lysed by adjusting the pH to 4.0 and readjusting it to 8.3. The lysate was crude filtered and its effects upon the larval development of the sea urchinLytechinus variegatusinvestigated. Sperm motility, fertilizability of the egg, and morphological development through blastula stage were unaffected. High mortality and various abnormalities were noted for gastrula and pluteus stages. Results suggest that the toxins may interfere with normal potassium flux and/or respiration in the embryos.
