Atmospheric sulfur compounds of biogenic origin are thought to constitute a significant fraction of the atmospheric sulfur burden. Determination of fluxes of these compounds into the atmosphere is desirable in order to permit accurate assessment of the relative roles of anthropogenic and biogenic sources in contributing to such phenomena as the atmospheric sulfate burden and acidity in precipitation.

Timed releases of cotton leafperforator,Bucculatrix thurberiellaBusck, into field cages of cotton,Gossypiumspp., showed that this insect is capable of causing heavy damage to a cotton crop if infestations are established early in the season. Pink bollworms,Pectinophora gossypiella(Saunders), released into cages caused severe reductions in yield. Although the pressure of both species produced even greater losses, the effects were not totally additive.

Total mercury and selenium concentrations were determined in 47 swordfish caught in the north‐west Atlantic ocean. Only 10 swordfish had total mercury levels equal to or below the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) limit of 0.5 μg of mercury/g of fish. All fish had significant quantities of selenium. All fish that contained mercury up to 2 mg/g had a molar excess of selenium compared to mercury.

Evidence is presented which indicates that elevated levels of sodium in 15 Massachusetts communities is caused, in part, by the addition of sodium hydroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite during the water treatment process. One community exhibited an average increase of 90 mg Na/1 as a result of the treatment process. Any comprehensive program to reduce sodium levels in drinking water must assess water treatment procedures as well as road salting activity.
