摘要:
A mathematical model of potable water treatment for toxic substance removal for use in exposure assessment modeling has been developed. The sedimentation, coagulation‐flocculation, filtration, aeration, chemical oxidation, and granular activated carbon adsorption treatment processes are modeled. The results of an example run of the model are presented.

Field tests were conducted to determine whether the insect sex pheromones gossyplure and prodlure could be used in the same trap to capture male pink bollworm moths andSpodoptera littoralismoths and to compare the efficiency of wet versus dry traps. Results showed conclusively that an antagonistic effect was produced by placing both pheromones in close proximity in the same or different traps and on the same or different dispensers; the effect was evident even with two traps located 0.5 meter apart. The antagonism was responsible for a permanent reduction in pink bollworm catches and a temporary reduction in captures ofS. littoralis. Dry open traps lined with 4% diazinon powder were superior to the standard widely used wet traps.

摘要:
Studies conducted in Israel throughout 1978 resulted in the development of an improved pheromone trap for capturing large numbers of maleSpodoptera littoralismoths in the field. The dry open trap is dusted on its interior walls with 4% diazinon to prevent the escape of moths attracted therein by a dispenser releasing the insect's synthetic sex pheromone, and it remains effective for 4 weeks without replenishing either the pheromone or the insecticide. Captures were 3 times greater with diazinon than with talc or silicates (Charsit and Wessalon).

摘要:
The use of PAN or 1‐(2‐pyridylazo‐2) naphthol loaded polyester type foams in extracting trace amounts of heavy metal ions from large volumes of water has been extended to cadmium. The extraction of this metal has been studied at four different (μg/L) concentration levels in water containing cations commonly found in river water. At each of these concentrations, the ratio of micrograms of cadmium extracted to the number of squeezes of foam has been obtained. From a plot of these cadmium concentration levels (in μg/L) against these calculated ratios, the concentration of this element in unknown waters may be semiquantitatively estimated.

The infection rates for variousSalmonellaserotypes in goldfish (Crassuis auratus) were evaluated under a number of controlled environmental conditions. Studies were undertaken to determine the number of salmonellae necessary to cause infection, and to elucidate the conditions instrumental to the continued persistence of the pathogen in the aquatic environment.

摘要:
Increasing evidence indicates that freshwater fishes may be naturally and experimentally infected withSalmonellaand may harbor the pathogen for more than 100 days. The effects upon the pathogenicity of various serotypes for white mice following residence in freshwater fishes was evaluated. Virulence patterns of serotypes cultured from fish were compared with the same serotypes cultured from man and lower animals.
