When domestic wastewaters of a small town were examined for the presence of organochlorine compounds, measurable amounts of chlorinated pesticides and polychlorobiphenyls were detected during a 25‐hour as well as a 5‐day period.

The soil affected by SO2is acidic, low in nutrients and contains a large portion of coarse particles due to the destruction of the vegetation by SO2released by the acid manufacturing plant, and soil erosion occurred as a consequence. Fine particles have been washed away and the coarse particles were left behind.

The distribution of the soil fungi and the edaphic properties of the iron‐ore tailings along the eastern coast of Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong were studied. There was a phenomena of fungal succession according to the different ages of the tailing‐deposits. There was a gradual decline in the number of fungal species and the abundance of mycelia related to depth and the distance towards the seashore. The occurrence of the fungi was found to be governed by some of the edaphic properties tested, such as texture, content of organic carbon, pH, etc. The content of the metals seemed to play a minor role. In view of the lack of the basic nutrients in the tailings, it is suggested that sewage sludge be applied for stimulating the decomposition of organic matter and the subsequent release of nutrients will be available to higher plants.

A high pressure liquid Chromatographie method was developed which is sensitive and selective for the detection and quantitation of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. This method entails the use of an ultraviolet detector in combination with a fluorescence detector. Ultraviolet and fluorescence responses of the PAHs are enhanced by using variable wavelength techniques. PAHs are identified and quantitated from emission source tests, and from airborne particulate matter.

A study of the reaction between dilute aqueous solutions of hypo‐chlorous acid at initial pH's of 6.0 and 3.5 with 2,6‐dichloro‐ and 2,4‐dichlorophenol and 2,4,5‐trichlorophenol is described. Extensive chlorination and/or oxidation of the phenols is observed. Identification of the products showed that reactions which occurred involve chlorination to more chlorinated phenols, oxidation to chloro‐p‐benzoquinones, addition of chlorine to the aromatic ring to form chlorinated 2,5‐cyclohexadienones, and addition of 2 moles of chlorine or one each of chlorine and hypo‐chlorous acid to give cyclohexenone derivatives. Cleavage of the aromatic ring with loss of one carbon atom was also detected.

Various devices for aerating lakes as part of a lake restoration program have been proposed, but methods for comparing aeration efficiency of these devices have limitations. For example, the oxygen transfer coefficient, KLa, might be used, but the values depend upon the size of the lake and other factors that are not always adequately specified in the literature. It is shown that comparisons based on aeration efficiency, P, weight of oxygen transferred per horsepower‐hour are superior to K,a values for rating efficiency of aerating devices. Aerating ratings based on values of P, however, must be sub‐classified for four conditions (steady‐state, non‐steady‐state, polluted, non‐polluted). The derivation, advantages, and utility of aeration efficiency is described.
