摘要:
Fifteen acids present in the natural sex pheromones produced by male Mediterranean fruit flies,Ceratitis capitata(Wiedemann), were separated by gas‐liquid chromatography and identified. Then combinations of the acids and of previously identified pheromones were bioassayed for attraction to virgin female Mediterranean fruit flies in an outdoor olfactometer. However, when 2 of the most promising combinations were tested in the field, they attracted large numbers of males, but no females. In the laboratory, females reared from fruit infested in the field responded to the synthetic pheromone. No explanation is available for these anomalous results.

摘要:
The chemical water quality in Pool 14 of the Mississippi River below Clinton, Iowa near the Quad‐Cities Nuclear Power Plant, was studied during the period August, 1972 through July, 1974. Variations in river discharge and suspended sediment affected many parameters. Increased discharge resulted in higher levels of total suspended solids, total P, chemical oxygen demand, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn. The increased suspended solids concentrations were responsible for the higher levels of total P, chemical oxygen demand, Fe, Mn and Cu. Variations in Fe and Mn concentrations correlated strongly with Cu, Pb and Zn. About 90% of the total Fe and Mn concentrations occurred in the suspended solids fraction. Total Hg concentrations did not correlate with either discharge or suspended solids.

摘要:
Aldrich humic acid was separated into humin, humic acid, and fulvic acid. These fractions and the unfractionated humic material were wet digested and analyzed for Cu, Cd, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn by atomic absorption. Solid samples and digests were also analyzed for manganese by neutron activation.

摘要:
In an investigation of petroleum hydrocarbons in the vicinity of a refinery docking facility in a “clean”; environment, water samples taken from the surface and at a 10‐m depth and sediment samples taken from a nearby beach were found to have essentially no contamination, while bottom sediment had a low level hydrocarbon contamination. Of particular interest was the relative abundance of benzo(a)pyrene in the bottom sediment.

摘要:
An experimental investigation was carried out to develop methods or devices for reducing indoor air pollution caused by kerosene heaters. Efforts were mainly directed toward reducing carbon‐monoxide concentrations from these heaters. A test chamber serving as a controlled room was constructed and the combustion gases generated by the heater and exhausted into the chamber were measured. A device applying both the idea of thermal reactor and catalysis was developed, which upon testing proved very effective in reducing carbon‐monoxide concentrations. In moderate burning capacities of the heater, the carbon‐monoxide level was reduced by a factor of 2 due to the use of the device. In a heater equipped with the device and operating at higher burning capacities, the concentration level of carbon‐monoxide was reduced by a factor of 6.

摘要:
The oxidation of H2S by O2at 25°C was investigated over the surface of MgO, NaY and MnNaY zeolites and silica‐alumina. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS or ESCA) evidence suggests that the oxidation produces elemental sulfur, sulfide ions and sulfite ions on the surface of MgO; whereas, H2S dissociates on zeolites, forming elemental sulfur. The manganese ions in the zeolite enhance the formation of sulfur. The oxidation was negligibly slow on the acidic silica‐alumina surface. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) evidence confirms that the ions S3‐, S2O‐, SO2‐, SO3‐and Sn‐are formed on the surface of MgO during various stages of the oxidation reaction.
