AbstractThe interferon (IFN) induction capacity of the XJ prototype strain of Junín virus (JV) was investigated in the guinea pig model. Circulating alpha IFN was detected in 50% of the animals from days 2 to 9 postinfection (pi) and in 100% at day 11 pi, when all animals were in the premortem stage.Individual levels ranged from 20 to 1,280 guinea pig IFN units (GPIFNU)/ml. A correlation between XJ strain virulence and IFN titers was recorded. A possible role of IFN as a pathogenic factor in the outcome of the disease is discussed

AbstractAdenovirus type 7 is the type most frequently associated with serious disease. Eighteen different genome types of adenovirus type 7 had been reported up to October 1986. The genome type Ad7c, based on the restriction enzyme profiles of SmaI and BamHI, has been reported from Europe prior to 1969 and more recently from South Africa. Here, we report two new genome types of adenovirus 7c that have not previously been identified and that have been isolated in South Africa between 1975 and 1986 from children with postmeasles pneumonia. The two new genome types differ from the prototype Ad7c virus in having two (Ad7c1) or one (Ad7c2) extra cleavage sites for the restriction endonuclease EcoRI. These sites have been located at 3.68kb and 5.32kb from the left terminus of the genome map published for the prototype Ad7c strain. A strain resembling the prototype Ad7c was also isolated in 1986 from a case of post measles pneumonia.

AbstractA recently developed radioimmunoprecipitation assay, using125I‐labeled human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral proteins enriched for glycoproteins gp120env, gp41env(GRIPA), was compared to the immunoblot assay with respect to sensitivity and specificity for the detection of antibodies to HIV. Longitudinal sets of serum samples of seroconverting homosexual men were studied, as were sera of six blood‐bank donors likely to be false‐positive in immunoblot. In addition, HIV isolation was attempted from white blood cells of these blood‐bank donors and of seropositive and seronegative individuals. In sets of seroconversion samples, the GRIPA appeared at least as sensitive as the immunoblot. Some sera already were clearly positive in the GRIPA at a time when there was only weak reactivity in immunoblot. In contrast, sera from blood‐bank donors that were regarded as false‐positive in immunoblot were negative in GRIPA. Virus culture from these donors was also negative. It is concluded that reactivity in immunoblot to core proteins only may well be false‐positive, whereas antibody reactivity in the radioimmunoprecipitation assay to p24gagsolely suggests ongoing seroconversion. This feature, in addition to a sensitivity for anti‐gp120envcomparable to immunoblotting, makes the GRIPA a useful confirmatory assay in sera that yield conflicting results in other HIV
