AbstractInfectivity of certain enteric viruses including rotavirus is profoundly affected by proteolytic enzymes. To test whether cystic fibrosis patients, possessing chronically decreased levels of pancreatic enzymes, show altered susceptibility to gastroenteritis viruses, we examined sera from patients and controls for antibodies to two major pathogens. In cystic fibrosis patients, normal rotavirus antibody levels were found and Norwalk virus antibody prevalence was unchanged.

AbstractImmune complexes of the hepatitis B e‐antigen (HBeAg) could be labeled and thus visually identified in the electron microscope by using antibody to HBeAg (anti‐HBe) tagged with colloidal gold particles. AbstractStudies with animal models suggest that alveolar macrophages may be important cells in some respiratory virus infections, but little is known about the role of these cells in virus infections in man. In this study human alveolar macrophages were obtained by fibreoptic bronchoscopy and infected in vitro with a variety of influenza viruses. After infection with the NWS strain of influenza virus the haemagglutinin and nucleoprotein viral antigens were demonstrated in>90% of cells at 24 h by immunofluorescence with specific antisera. There was no cytopathic effect at this time, and no virus release was detected by plaque assay of culture fluids on MDCK cells.Alveolar macrophages were also infected with a human vaccine strain (H1N1) of influenza virus and with two recent isolates (H1N1and H3N2). In each case viral nucleoprotein antigen was produced in 10–20% of the cells by 24 h postinfection, but there was no release of infectious virus. AbstractHepatitis B viral DNA present in the liver of HBe antigen positive chimpanzee carriers is in the form of free viral molecules (3.2 Kb) and no integration into host DNA was observed. The 3.2 Kb form was not detected in the serum. Other discrete HBV DNA species with faster mobilities than the major 3.2 Kb were consistently detected both in the liver and in the serum and their possible significance is discussed.

AbstractThe hepatitis B virus (HBV) status of six unselected South African Black children, aged 10 to 16 years, with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was investigated. The characteristics of the tumor were similar to those seen in Black adults. Hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody to the core antigen were present in the serum of all the children, and hepatitis Be antigen was detected in four of the children. The serum of the two patients without e antigen was positive for e antibody, and all sera were negative for hepatitis B surface antibody. Taken in conjunction with the HBV status of southern African Black adults with HCC, these findings raise the possibility that nearly all, if not all, Black patients with this tumor are or have been infected with HBV. Moreover, if HBV is oncogenic, tumor formation may occur within 10 years of the initial infection, which occurs in early childhood in southern African Blacks.

AbstractThe safety and immunogenicity of adw and ayw hepatitis B vaccines were compared in a double‐blind randomized trial in Greek Air Force recruits. One hundred and ten out of 240 eligible nonimmune recruits were randomly selected and allocated to thc two vaccine treatment groups. Two 20‐m̈g doses 1 month apart and a third 20‐m̈gbooster dose, at 6 months, were given intramuscularly. Severe local or general side effects were not observed. The frequency of mild side effects (local discomfort or pain, fever less than 37.5°C, and malaise) was slightly higher with the adw than with the ayw vaccine. Antibodies developed earlier and in higher titers in adw vaccinees. However, after the booster dose all ayw and all but one adw vaccinees developed anti‐HBs in almost similar titers. It is concluded that both vaccines are equally safe and immunogenic after administration of two doses at a 1‐month interval followed by a booster dose

AbstractSerum complement profiles of 19 renal transplant recipients were studied serially before and after renal transplantation to determine if there is any relationship between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and alteration in the serum complement (C) levels. Most patients had low serum C3 and C4 levels before transplantation, but afterwards these levels increased in some patients. Clq was elevated before and after transplantation. Factor B was low before transplantation, but after surgery, its level approached normal in patients without cytomegalovirus viremia, whereas in those with viremia, Factor B level became even more depressed. Circulating Factor B fragments were found in the sera of five out of seven patients with active cytomegalovirus infection, which suggests activation of the alternative pathway possibly related to active CMV infection.
