摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper analyzes the dealership credit limit problem in terms of the valuation of a Markov process of cash flows with sequential credit decisions over an infinite planning horizon. The formulation distinguishes between the upper bound on credit applicable at the account formation stage and the upper bound applicable to periodic reorders. The result is a closed form solution to the problem which serves as a criterion function for approving or denying credit on a customer‐by‐customer basis.Data for a sample of manufacturing firms are employed to estimate typical ranges for criterion function parameters. Upper bounds on credit limits are then calculated and graphically presented for median parameter values as well as for values at the 5th and 95th percentiles for the sample data. Finally, an empirical study is conducted of actual trade credit extended by firms. The results support the hypothesis that the variables in the decision model are important determinants of the amount of trade credit outstand

摘要:
ABSTRACTIn this paper, we report on the application of set covering and maximal covering location models to the problem of locating emergency warning sirens in a midwestern city. Two siren types are available, each having different costs and covering radii. Using a modified version of the set covering location model, we analyze the cost implications of several policy options being considered by the city's planners. Results of the study indicate that location covering models can be powerful and efficient tools in the design of such systems, and their use can lead to significant cost savings. In addition, such models provide decision makers the flexibility to examine the inherent costs associated with various policy options.

摘要:
ABSTRACTField service repair management is increasing in importance as “high tech” machines such as computers, communication systems, and copy machines are becoming more popular and more widely disbursed geographically. Complicating the management of these systems are response time performance guarantees (e.g., 8‐hour response time), which are a popular marketing tool for many field service businesses [21]. These response time), guarantees especially complicate the field service dispatching problem. With response time guarantees, dispatchers must consider travel times and other issues to determine which call should be assigned to an available technician. This research proposes several dispatching rules that might be applied for dispatching sequential‐trip technicians in this environment and compares these rules in a simulation experiment to determine which rule is best in terms of average tardiness. The proposed composite travel time‐expiration time rule was found to be the best on average tardiness performance and on all other tardiness‐related measures. Given the increased importance of tardiness performance in field service organizations, the proposed composite rule appears to h

摘要:
ABSTRACTA new multiperiod variation of theM‐traveling salesman problem is introduced. The problem arises in efficient scheduling of optimal interviews among tour brokers and vendors at conventions of the tourism and travel industry. In classical traveling salesman problem vocabulary, a salesman is a tour broker at the convention and a city is a vendor's booth. In this problem, more than one salesman may be required to visit a city, but at most one salesman per time period can visit each city. The heuristic solution method presented is polynomial and is guaranteed to produce a nonconflicting set of salesmen's tours. The results of an implementation of the method for a recent convention are also reporte

摘要:
ABSTRACTUsing a regression approach to discriminant analysis is often incorrect because it forces the use of a binary dependent variable which violates virtually any distributional assumption for a linear model. However, assuming a Laplace distribution in an LP framework leads to a theoretical foundation for MSD discriminant analysis.
