摘要:
ABSTRACTA model for measuring subjective evaluations of multiple component alternatives is developed and tested in the context of business students' evaluations of professorial candidates for tenured positions. The model is based on a type of ANOVA formulation in which the response variable need only be rank ordered. That is, arbitrary monotonic functions of subjective responses can be made that optimize a well‐defined badness of fit measure.Application of the model indicates that metric analysis of the response data can exhibit a large number of configural (interaction) effects that may be a reflection of how subjects use rating scales rather than anything more basic in their combination of multiple component cues. Implications of these findings for the modeling of multiple component choices are discusse

摘要:
ABSTRACTFrequently, alternative theories are proposed as relevant models for an economic process. Which alternative is a relatively better representation is a question of fact, but empirical methods of resolving the issue have not been compelling. This study developes a technique for discrimination from Bayesian statistical theory. This technique can analyze an arbitrary number of alternatives simultaneously, and each alternative can be characterized by distribution theory appropriate to its structure. An example, the aggregate consumption function, is considered, and each alternative is characterized by the Normal regression process. The results may only be regarded as suggestive, as the parameterization of the structure may be incomplete on that assumption.

摘要:
ABSTRACTAsymmetric loss functions often arise where regression estimates are used in management decision making. However, regression analysis has traditionally made use of a symmetric loss function in which the cost of underestimating equals the cost of overestimating. If the loss function is linear and the degree of asymmetry can be determined, the asymmetric regression method presented in this paper can be employed to find appropriate regression estimates. Asymmetric regression analysis requires no unusual data inputs other than an estimate of the cost asymmetry and can be performed efficiently using standard linear programming techniques.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper is concerned with the solution of linear and linear goal programming problems in which the values of the right‐hand side parameters are not fixed constants. Specifically, we are concerned with linear optimization problems in which the right‐hand sides of the constraining equations are free to vary subject to a set of linear constraining equations. By formulating a relaxed linear program wherein the right‐hand sides are treated as variables, we show how it is possible to solve one larger linear program that yields as a solution not only the optimal values for the decision variables, but also the optimal values for the right‐han

摘要:
ABSTRACTCulturally determined norms are seen as guides to the subjective components in the decision process. An understanding of normative elements in choicemaking must therefore begin with an analysis of the culture relevant to the decision. Ways in which the Western twentieth‐century intellectual and cultural climate have influenced the ability of modern managers to make value‐laden decisions are examined. Implications of relativism for management decision making along with the influences of relativistic decision making on organizational health also are discus

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper reports the results of an experiment which investigated the effects of various ways of structuring decision problems under uncertainty (viz, matrix, tree, versus word representations) and various forms of feedback (discussion versus non‐discussion of prepared answers conforming to and deviating from the irrelevance of identical outcomes postulate) on consistent choice behavior (i.e., in accordance with this postulate) in the context of Allais and Morlat‐type (A&M) problems. The special structure of A&M problems is especially useful for studying such behavior in that it presumably leads to a set of choices that violates this fundamental norm of decision theory. The experiment involved 134 industrial management undergraduates who gambled to improve their grades in a statistics course. The results showed that: (1) structuring such problems as “decision trees” or “decision matrices” had either a detrimental or no beneficial effect respectively on the number of consistent responses; while (2) discussion led to some improvement in consistency over no discussion. The implications of the findings for training in rational decision making ar

摘要:
ABSTRACTThere are two major types of job‐choice models in the current literature. One may be called an ideal job model, and the other is primarily a linear utility model. This study attempts to compare the predictive capacity of the two types of models. The ideal job model implemented in the study performs better than a linear utility model in predicting preferences among a set of standard job offer

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe Rokeach Dogmatism Scale was employed to identify subjects possessing either open or closed belief systems. Forty‐eight subjects were randomly selected and assigned to eight open‐open, eight open‐closed, and eight closed‐closed pairs. The dyads then played a modified version of the Prisoner's Dilemma where they were also permitted to communicate using a predetermined list of messages. It was found that the eight open‐open pairs cooperated significantly more than the other pairs in the experiment. However, results also suggest that individuals possessing open belief systems may not be able to achieve significantly greater cooperation with individuals possessing a closed belief system than two individuals both possessing closed belie

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper describes how the core portion of the undergraduate business program at Indiana University was revised to facilitate integration of basic functionally oriented decision making skills and thus help students gain a deeper understanding of the interdependence of business decisions. It relates, in essence, why and how a single computer‐oriented case study which demanded a solution to a large‐scale, unified finance‐marketing‐production problem was used at Indiana University, mentions how we plan to accomplish further integration of functional material, and provides some insight into student reaction to what was, in fact, a massive project from both student and administrative points
