摘要:
ABSTRACTChoice‐constrained conjoint analysis (CCCA) is a new method for metric conjoint analysis studies. It computes part‐worth utility functions that account for “revealed preference”—those products a respondent actually selects in an independent choice situation. CCCA uses an iterative penalty function estimation procedure that successively modifies initial regressionderived part worths so that respondent choices (either actual or intended) of real brands are predicted as accurately as possible. The paper first describes the motivation and rationale for CCCA and presents the mathematics of the algorithm. As an illustration, it applies the CCCA model and penalty function estimation procedure to a limited set of synthetic data. A second application of the technique is presented that uses data obtained by a major telecommunications firm that used conjoint analysis to examine the importance of several features of residential communication devices. The paper also discusses potential extensions of the CCCA model and the kinds of marketing applications for which it might

摘要:
ABSTRACTThe relationships of specific distinctive competencies to performance were examined for firm size, type of production system, and level of perceived environmental uncertainty (PEU). The size and dominant production system used by a firm were found to have main moderating effects on those relationships although PEU by itself did not. However, PEU did interact with size and production system to moderate those relationships.

摘要:
ABSTRACTIn many developing countries where supply is limited, a premium rather than a discounted price is paid for buying in larger amounts. In order for management science/operations research solutions to be relevant to developing economies, such realities need to be explicitly recognized and any decisions evaluated from that perspective. To illustrate this point, a typical inventory‐purchasing problem is solved. In the process, formulae are developed that introduce simultaneous price and quantity sensitivity into the inventory equation. A systematic procedure is suggested to locate the optimal order quantity for a given schedule of discounts or premium

摘要:
ABSTRACTIn a standard costing system, deviations (variances) of actual cost from standard cost should be investigated in order to help management identify the causes of the variances and who is responsible for them before corrective actions are taken. In reality, however, actual cost rarely equals standard cost and so many variances occur that it is impractical and uneconomical to investigate all of them. These two conflicting factors—the necessity of investigating cost variances and the impracticality of investigating all the variances—present management with the problem of deciding which variances to investigate. In this paper a model, based on fuzzy set theory, for the cost‐variance investigation is proposed and applied to an actual investigation problem faced by a manufacturing co

摘要:
ABSTRACTA number of heuristic decision rules have been proposed to aid in the location of quality inspection stations within a production line. Although these rules apparently enjoy an intuitive appeal, as yet no empirical investigation of their individual efficacies has been undertaken. This research identifies the relations between various cost and/or process characteristics and a designated “operative condition” that motivates the apparent rationale of five of these rules‐of‐thumb. Experimental results suggest that for several of the heuristics the operative condition was not associated with the performance of the rule. In addition, constraints in the processing environment were found to influence the effectiveness of the heu

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper describes an integer programming model that we believe has advantages over other models for determining faculty teaching assignments. Unlike previously proposed models, in this model the decision variables represent the assignment of complete teaching schedules rather than courses to faculty members. The paper compares the proposed model with previous models for application in an academic department.

摘要:
ABSTRACTThis paper describes an iterative process for deploying police patrol force manpower. An application of the process is described as a case study of the St. Louis County Police Department (Missouri). The application is based on the county geographic information system (COGIS) and uses the hypercube queuing model (HQM). The procedures presented illustrate the generation of performance characteristics associated with a specific beat deployment. The application results indicate that the iterative model presented is a reliable and valid instrument for allocating police patrols.

摘要:
ABSTRACTA logit model approach designed to assign a probability whether prospective jurors will favor the defendant or plaintiff in a case, as a function of perceived individual juror characteristics, is described in the context of a case situation. The model, which has been programmed on a hand‐held computer, is designed for implementation in courtroom settings to help defense attorneys evaluate and select jurors in order to minimize the likelihood of large jury awards. Empirical tests of the model are also describe
