Population abundance and mortality rates of the spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) in the vicinity of Pine Island, Florida, were studied using internal anchor tags. Five thousand four hundred nine fish were tagged during the period January 6 through 20, 1961. From January 21 through May 31, 1961, recoveries totalled 1,349 (24.9 percent). The total weight of the adult population as of January 21 was estimated by the Petersen method at 973,000 pounds, and the range was from 832,000 to 1,172,000 pounds at the 95-percent confidence level. Total mortality was divided into fishing mortality and other losses, with a ratio of about 1 to 5. Other losses consisted mainly of natural mortality, slight losses by emigration, and loss of tags.

A modified scoop trap was designed and constructed to sample downstream-migrant juvenile salmon in the Taku River, a turbid river in southeastern Alaska. A sampling program was designed to determine the behavior of these migrants with respect to their seasonal and daily timing, the size and age composition of the various species, and the correlation between certain of these biological measurements and the physical characteristics of the environment. The length-weight relationships and condition factors of chinook, coho, and sockeye smolts were determined; differences in these relationships by week and by time of day are discussed.

Little is known about the periodicity of mortality of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) between the egg stage at midwinter and the fingerling stage the following fall. In a 300-yard (0.77-acre) section of the Pigeon River, Otsego County, Michigan, the average instantaneous mortality rate of young brook trout was computed to be 0.02419 per day from emergence in March to June 26, 0.00691 per day from June 26 to July 24, and 0.00519 per day from July 24 to September 19, 1961.

Life histories of the golden redhorse (Moxostoma erythrurum), northern redhorse (M. macrolepidotum), and silver redhorse (M. anisurum) were studied on the Des Moines River in central Iowa. Adult golden redhorse are widely distributed within the study area; silver redhorse and young golden redhorse are primarily in areas where the current is slower; northern redhorse are generally present in fast-moving water. Redhorse populations are sedentary in the summer as judged from the movements of 1,642 fin-clipped redhorses.
