摘要:
The annual spawner-recruit relationship for white shrimpPenaeus setiferusin the southwestern Gulf of Mexico did not show a significant correlation (0.10 >P> 0.05) from 1973 to 1984.1 attribute this to the effect of environmental factors as well as to the interannual variability of recruitment strength in the main cohorts throughout each year. A Ricker stock-recruitment relationship was established for dominant cohorts in the 1973–1984 study period. The variance explained by the model increased from 70 to 82% (multiple correlationr= 0.903,P< 0.001) when river discharges during the spawning month and before recruitment were included. I propose that the magnitude of recruitment largely depends on the carrying capacity of critical nursery habitats. Fishing effort is related to recruit abundance and has a direct effect in determining spawner stock size (multiple correlationr= 0.91,P< 0.001). Through multiple-regression techniques, a surface was defined where the recruitment level varied according to spawning stock size as well as to river discharge.

摘要:
Cell lines were established from spleen and heart tissues of a juvenile white sturgeonAcipenser transmontanusand designated WSS-2 and WSH-1, respectively. Isoenzyme analyses of both lines confirmed their host of origin. Both lines were hypotetraploid and possessed micro- and macrochromosomes. The modal chromosome number for the WSS-2 line was 219; the WSH-1 line had a bimodal distribution with modes of 237 and 243. The effects of temperature on growth and susceptibility to selected viral pathogens were examined for the WSS-2 line. Cell replication occurred at 15–30°C, optimum temperature was 25°C. Cell survival was observed after 11 d at 10°C but not at 35°C. The WSS-2line was refractory to infections with channel catfish virus (CCV) and infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) but susceptible to infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and white sturgeon iridovirus (WSIV). The need for cell lines from the host of origin in studies of viral pathogens of fish was demonstrated by the ability of the WSS-2 line to support replication of WSIV.

摘要:
We compared healing rates of incisions closed with sutures or a cyanoacrylate adhesive to determine the suitability of adhesive in closing incisions in black crappiesPomoxis nigromaculatusused in telemetry studies. Postoperative survival of test fish and control fish was 100% over the course of the experiment. Use of adhesive reduced surgery time by 38% but sutured incisions healed faster. Within 21 d postsurgery, 70% of fish implanted with dummy transmitters lost transmitters through incisions closed with adhesive.

摘要:
Otoliths, scales, and spines of two recaptured subadult red drumsSciaenops ocellatus(514 and 537 mm total length) were examined for induced fluorescence 10 months after injection with oxytetracycline–HCl at about 50 mg/kg body weight. Both fish exhibited fluorescence in sagitta, lapillus, and asteriscus otoliths, scales, and dorsal and anal spines. Sagittae from both fish had formed an annulus between release and recapture.
