Flow-through acute toxicity tests on juvenile northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus oregonensis) were conducted with copper, cadmium, and zinc. The 96-hour median lethal concentrations were 18 μg/liter for copper, 1,104 μg/liter for cadmium, and 3,693 μg/liter for zinc in 12 C water. These values, when compared to those for chinook salmon and steelhead parr tested under similar conditions, show that the northern squawfish are more tolerant than the two salmonids to zinc and cadmium but equally sensitive to copper.

Water analysis kits (Bausch and Lomb SpectroKits TM, Ecologic test kits, and CHEMetrics test kits) were evaluated by comparison with standard analytical methods. Results of analyses with water analysis kits were highly correlated with concentrations of standard solutions. In replicate analyses of pond water, kits gave results that often differed from, and usually were less precise than, standard methods. When large series of water samples were analyzed, values from kits and standard methods were highly correlated (r > 0.85; P < 0.01), but regression intercepts seldom were 0 and slopes seldom were 1.0. Thus, water analysis kits are not suitable when high accuracy and precison are necessary, but kits are sufficiently reliable in many applications.

Tilapia mossambica maintained at high densities in an intensive-culture tank system displayed hypersensitivity to a component present in mucus and culture water. The component induced cutaneous anaphylactic reactions in T. mossambica and three other Tilapia species, but did not affect Ictalurus punctatus. Gel filtration studies revealed the component to be high molecular weight (larger than 8 × 105daltons) which electrophoretically migrated as a beta globulin. The component recovered from tank water of T. mossambica was not found in T. aurea tank water or in the incoming water. Tilapia mossambica experience higher mortality due to this autoimmune reaction, which limits the density at which this species can be stocked. Because the compound affects several species within the Tilapia genus, its effects should be considered when tilapias are stocked in fish culture operations.

摘要:
An underwater camera system was designed to record the behavior of male nest-guarding longear sunfish (Lepomis megalotus) during periods of boating activity. Boats traveling at slow speeds near nests usually drove males from their nests, increasing the likelihood of egg predation. Boats moving at higher speeds or further from nests caused little or no displacement of males, but increased turbidity and possible success of predators. Location of a nest near cover increased the male's ability to protect his nest during repeated surface disturbances.
