Diet and growth were compared for lake whitefishCoregonus clupeaformiscaught before and after the recent introduction ofMysis relictato Flathead Lake, Montana. Most foods and seasonal feeding patterns were similar, except that lake whitefish now also eat mysids. Mysids were eaten by fish larger than 100 mm total length, and especially by fish larger than 400 mm collected in the fall. Mean length at first annulus was less in most years following the mysid introduction than before (Student'st,P< 0.05). Mean lengths at other annuli were similar between the two periods. Larger lake whitefish may be less sensitive to reduced zooplankton abundance caused by mysid predation because they feed on benthic fauna. They may also benefit from the recent availability of mysids for their diet.

Striped bassMorone saxatiliswere collected from Lake Anna, a thermally enriched Virginia reservoir, and Smith Mountain Lake, an ambient-temperature Virginia reservoir, and their ovaries were compared for differences in vitellolipid and vitelloprotein. Habitat analyses indicated summer temperatures and dissolved oxygen concentrations were stressful to striped bass in Lake Anna and nonstressful to striped bass in Smith Mountain Lake. Summer ovary weights, condition factors, and body lengths and weights were significantly lower for Lake Anna striped bass than for Smith Mountain Lake fish. Total vitellolipid and total vitelloprotein concentrations did not differ significantly between the two samples, but concentrations of vitellotriglyceride and other esters and of certain component vitelloproteins were significantly greater in ovaries of Smith Mountain Lake striped bass. These data indicate bioenergetic stresses in Lake Anna did not significantly affect the quantity of vitellolipids and vitelloproteins sequestered by Lake Anna striped bass, but did significantly affect vitellolipid and vitelloprotein composition.

Newly hatched larvae of silver carpHypophthalmichthys molitrixwere fed fluorescent latex microspheres 5, 10, and 25 μm in diameter over an 80-h incubation. No spheres were observed in the gut region until 72 h posthatch, and larvae appeared to prefer smaller spheres at 72 h. This technique may be a useful tool in establishing the onset of particulate feeding and in the study of early feeding behavior.
