Utilizing the “most cited journal” method, it was determined that 24 periodicals yielded 50% coverage of fishery biology by North American workers. One hundred and six periodicals yielded 75% coverage. Chronologically, a 9-year time span yielded 50% coverage and a 17-year time span yielded 75% coverage. Most papers became obsolete after 25 years.

Two groups of 20 yearling rainbow trout were exposed continuously to inflowing water containing 0.15 and 0.55 mg/liter nitrite as nitrite nitrogen (NO2N), for 48 and 24 hr, respectively. Both groups developed methemoglobinemia but mortality occurred only at the highest concentration (55%). Salmon exposed to 0.50 mg/liter NO2N for 24 hr developed methemoglobinemia and suffered a 40% mortality. Fingerling trout were less sensitive to nitrite than yearlings.

Adult anadromous alewives were captured during spring spawning runs into Lake Mattamuskeet, North Carolina in 1969, 1970 and 1971. The peak of the spawning runs occurred on 5 and 6 April 1970, and 2 and 3 April 1971. Average water temperatures on these dates were 12.9 C and 13.1 C, respectively.

Stomach analysis of landlocked Atlantic salmon and brook trout from Echo Lake, Maine, indicated that salmon relied more on open water prey (landlocked alewives, rainbow smelt and terrestrial insects) than did brook trout, which fed more on bottom and shoreline prey (sticklebacks, killifish and aquatic invertebrates). Most fish were eaten by salmon and trout in summer and few were eaten in winter. Young-of-the-year alewives constituted an important portion of the salmon diet, especially in late summer, but were not significant forage for trout. The isopod Asellus racovitzai racovitzai was important forage for trout in winter and spring. A review of studies concerning food habits of salmon and trout indicates utilization of pelagic forage fish is related to lake area.

Examination of 510 stomachs of Sacramento perch from five localities showed that they feed primarily by picking insect larvae and snails from the bottom and aquatic plants or by capturing zooplankton, fish, or emerging insects in midwater. The diet varies with season and size of fish but no daily feeding rhythms were found. Similarity of their diet to that of bluegill indicates that Sacramento perch may have been eliminated from their native habitat through competitive interactions with bluegill.

Age and growth of the longnose gar in Tuttle Creek Reservoir were studied. The 101 gars were aged from the branchiostegal rays. The fish length-branchiostegal length relationship was L = 174.21 + 25.74 B, where L = total fish length in mm and B = branchiostegal length in mm. Female gars grew faster than males. Growth increments for males for the first 6 years were 504.7, 123.7, 80.8, 48.6, 38.7, 22.8 mm; for females, for the first 8 years, 522.7, 164.1, 96.7, 64.5, 50.6, 59.7, 40.7, 20.7 mm. The length-weight relationship was Log W = -6.426 + 3.274 Log L, where W = weight in g and L = total length in mm. Growth of gars in Tuttle Creek Reservoir was greater than that reported in other areas.
