Management of forest watersheds in the western United States for protection against floods and sediment and to improve water yields can also be very beneficial in fishery management. Some of the important hydrologic processes that operate on watersheds are discussed. The principal kinds of watershed protection and water yield improvement problems are outlined and discussed in relation to maintenance of desirable fish habitat. Need for research to determine quantitative hydrologic relationships on watersheds and develop methods of forest management for better regulated and higher quality stream-flow is emphasized.

The Federal Aid in Fisheries Act has proven to be of great value to the Southeastern States. Since 1951, 123 Dingell-Johnson projects have been initiated in these states and the following suggestions are made for the future facilitation of the program. Some Southeastern states are continuing to issue county fishing licenses and/or free fishing licenses. It is suggested that these states would be better able to participate more fully in the Federal Aid program if they would require all resident fishermen to have a state-wide license. No priority of project selection on a regional or national scale is desirable. The individual states are best qualified to determine which phases of fisheries work should be emphasized. Continued success of the Federal Aid program is dependent upon the states' willingness to hire and keep competent professional personnel.
