摘要:
All possible crosses among three species of sunfishes—the bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque; the redear, Lepomis microlophus (Günther); and the redbreast, Lepomis auritus (Linnaeus)—were successfully produced. One cross, female redbreast X male bluegill, was made by placing one adult of each species in a plastic pool and allowing them to spawn. The five remaining crosses were produced two to nine times each by stripping and artificial insemination.

The tolerances of larval lampreys, rainbow trout, and 10 species of warmwater fishes to 3-trifluormethyl-4-nitrophenol (TFM), a selective lamprey larvicide, were determined in three dilution waters of different physical and chemical characteristics. Differential toxic effects of the chemical to larval lampreys and test fishes varied broadly with the species of fish. Smallmouth bass and other centrarchids were most tolerant of the chemical; walleye, yellow perch, bullheads, and white suckers were most susceptible. The toxicity of TFM to both lampreys and fishes diminished as the conductivity and alkalinity of the dilution water increased. The differential action of the chemical was retained in all waters, however.

The homing behavior of smallmouth bass was studied in two small Ozark streams; Big Buffalo Creek with relatively permanent pools, and Little Saline Creek with many unstable pools continually altered by the shift of chert gravel. The smallmouth bass in both streams normally restrict their movements to limited sections of the streams, usually one distinct pool.

Records obtained from the Muskegon River system, the Inland Waterway, and Bay de Noc in northern Lake Michigan indicate that walleyes return to the same spawning areas year after year. Walleyes were tagged and released during the spawning period at several locations. Where netting was repeated in subsequent years many tagged walleyes were recaptured at the locations where they were tagged previously. Walleyes which were tagged and released at sites where netting was not repeated were not recaptured at other locations. The return of tagged walleyes to areas where they had been in previous seasons and the scarcity of tagged walleyes from other areas provide strong evidence for homing behavior by this species.

Study of marked adult walleyes returning to a spawning site in Many Point Lake, northern Minnesota, showed evidence of homing behavior rather than a strictly random return in successive years. The homing behavior, however, was not shown by the majority of the fish, and among those which evinced homing behavior the pattern of return was irregular. Possible causes of variation in homing in different years and circumstances which could produce an apparent homing effect are discussed.

Bluegill age and growth data were obtained from 24 small farm ponds near Ithaca, New York. Criteria for annulus recognition were developed from scales of known-age bluegills which consisted of original stock in the ponds. Twelve separate criteria permitted recognition of annuli in nearly all samples.

A hurricane caused heavy mortality among aquatic animals in north Florida Bay in September 1960. Fish and invertebrates were stranded by retreating salt water which had been driven inland, or were killed by mud suffocation or turbulence. Oxygen depletion due to decomposition of organic material caused subsequent mortality. Salinities returned to normal within 6 weeks, but dissolved oxygen concentrations remained abnormally low for a longer period. Fish and invertebrates were scarce for several months in the areas of greatest oxygen depletion. When environmental conditions again became suitable, the stricken areas were recolonized from surrounding regions. Sport-fish catches in the area declined immediately after the storm, but recovered within one to several months, depending on the locality. Catch statistics indicate that after the storm juvenile pink shrimp moved from their estuarine nursery grounds into deeper water about 60 miles offshore, where they were caught by the fishery. There is no evidence that the aquatic fauna of the area suffered any permanent damage.

A study of the biology of the gray snapper was based on the examination of 849 fish collected primarily from the sport fishery of Everglades National Park. Gray snappers from Park waters ranged from 1 to 5 years of age, with age-groups II and III making up 62 and 29 percent of the catch. Mean lengths for each age group, age and length at recruitment into the sport fishery, length-weight relationship, and sex ratio of gray snapper are given. All Everglades Park fish were immature.

Surveys were conducted at 29 locations in the Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron drainages to determine if larval sea lamprey, Petromyzon marinus, inhabit lentic waters. A direct-current shocker and a dredge were used to take samples near the mouths of streams that produce sea lampreys. In the Great Lakes proper, 26 larvae were taken from 10 of the 22 areas that were surveyed. In small lakes tributary to the Great Lakes, 113 larvae were taken from 3 of the 7 lakes studied. Nearly all larvae were collected within 1/4 mile of the mouth of a stream containing larvae, usually from silty-sand substrate in areas protected from severe wave action. Aquatic vegetation and bottom-dwelling animals were usually present at locations where larvae were collected.

Native brook trout were transplanted within the Ellerslie Brook System, Prince Edward Island, in summer, to determine how well they could compete with trout already resident in other habitats of the same stream. The resident trout in a habitat appeared to have a competitive advantage. This advantage was greater in habitats of low trout-carrying capacity. Transplanted trout fared better in partially depopulated habitats. Mortalities were higher among the transplanted trout during the ensuing 12-month period. Few transplanted trout homed to the area from which they had been displaced.
