摘要:
Healing is an unfulfilled potential in the current healthcare system. Although illness is a ritual that necessitates the social support of natural networks and healers, the organization of hospitals impedes support and healing. In this article, the authors analyze the ritual of illness, the hospital as a technological bureaucracy, social networks, and social support, and make recommendations for action by nurses who identify themselves as healers.

摘要:
Empirical investigation of reminiscence as a naturally occurring process and as a therapeutic nursing intervention has been hampered by the lack of a theoretical framework that can integrate diverse viewpoints and account for existing data. This article presents a preliminary model of reminiscence that can guide future research efforts and assist clinicians in understanding the functions of the reminiscence process. The model proposes that reminiscence is a source of self‐referent knowledge, which influences a person's self‐worth. It views reminiscence as a process of acquiring personal existential meaning and as a mechanism for adapting to str

摘要:
The healthcare environment today is saturated with documentation requirements. The magnitude of nursing time dedicated to this paperwork is substantial. Many chiefs of nursing service have considered computerized patient care information systems in an effort to maximize nursing resources and improve patient care. To this end, the Secretary's Commission on Nursing(1988)cited the use of computer technology as one of the three best paths to easing the country's nursing shortage. The author focuses on the problems in nurses' daily work and the role automation plays in facilitating the process of care delivery and explains factors acting as barriers to automation.

摘要:
Nursing is multidimensional, interactive, interdisciplinary, and complex. Almost anything that can be said about nursing can be said another way. Some things worth being said and heard will not follow the norms of journal presentation. A forum accommodates the emerging voice, the new format, the innovative approach.Nursing Forum, in an effort to honor the “independent voice” in nursing, presents here the voice who elects to enter the dialogue, but who does so “in another

摘要:
Judgment is an important aspect of nursing practice. This author provides an historical overview of judgment theory, research evidence of the heuristics and biases used by decision makers in their judgments, and a discussion of the fallibility of inferred knowledge–with an emphasis on overconfidence as a primary bias in judgment. The content includes also suggestions for improving judgments, and the implications of normative and non‐normative judgment models for nurs

摘要:
To spark productive and continuing dialogue, good conversation needs to end with a light touch, yet one that whets the appetite for more.Nursing Forumhonors this dictum by giving “The Last Word” for this issue to Ms. R. Kane, a registered nurse at a small, unnamed hospital in an obscure community. Ms. Kane has been troubled for some time by nursing theories that either elude her comprehension or ignore salient realities. She has elected to address this problem by developing a collection of mid‐range theories she believes will improve this situ
