Twelve years’ experience in the therapeutic use of human pituitary gonadotrophins in 74 patients with anovulation is reviewed. Of these 74 patients, 54 conceived on at least one occasion. A new development, the use of radioimmunossays for oestrone‐3‐glucuronide and pregnanediol‐3‐glucuronide to monitor responses, has been shown to be as effective as the more laborious chemical methods which were previously used. The adoption of radioimunossay monitoring allows the simultaneous treatment of up to five patients, and will markedly reduce existing waiting lists for this treatment.

A random mail survey of 726 adults living in the Adelaide metropolitan area was carried out to determine the prevalence of dietary supplementation and its relationship to health. In the month before the survey, 37% of men and 53% of women had taken some form of supplement. The most popular supplements were bran, multivitamins, B‐complex vitamins, vitamin C and wheatgerm. Most supplementation was used regularly (daily or almost daily) and over a prolonged period. Although the subjects who took supplements did not use medical facilities more often than those who took none, they reported having more bouts of minor illness in the preceding year. They also reported the more frequent occurrence of minor symptoms, and took more unprescribed medications than did those who did not use dietary supplements.

Health care workers in the Royal Newcastle Hospital, in surrounding hospitals and pathology services, and in a large mental institution were surveyed to determine the prevalence of hepatitis B markers. The aim of the study was to identify the groups of workers at particular risk of contracting hepatitis B in order to determine which workers would benefit most from a programme of vaccination against hepatitis B. Although the prevalence of hepatitis B markers in the Newcastle health care workers was higher than that in the control subjects, this rate did not approach the high rates previously reported in overseas studies.

Over a three‐year period, 30 children were admitted to the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney, with a diagnosis of Kawasaki disease. Of these, 26 children underwent echocardiography which demonstrated coronary artery aneurysms in five. Angiography was performed in one patient whose aneurysm did not resolve spontaneously. No patient suffered significant morbidity, and none died.

A 39‐year‐old woman developed pulmonary hypertension after using an orally administered anorectic drug, propylhexedrine hydrochloride, over a period of eight years. This association has not previously been reported.
