Experimental studies in pregnant rats failed to demonstrate the presence of a teratogenic agent in water from the Mount Gambier Blue Lake or from several local bores, even when the water from each of those two sources was concentrated tenfold and fivefold, respectively, by freeze drying. The experimental data thus failed to corroborate the previously reported epidemiological evidence of an increased risk of human teratogenesis in pregnant women who were drinking water from these sources. The growth of rat embryos in culture on serum taken from pregnant women in the Mount Gambier region was identical, regardless of the source of drinking water consumed by the individual donors. The findings do not suggest the presence of a teratogen in Mount Gambier water supplies; however, they should be regarded with the caution which is necessarily associated with teratology studies conducted across the boundaries of species.

The mortality from leukaemias and lymphomas in a tropical urban region of Queensland (Townsville) and in the mainly tropical cane‐farming regions of Queensland was investigated. It was found that, compared with the general population of Queensland, there were fewer deaths from neoplastic disease of the lymphatic tissues in women in both regions; that there were fewer deaths from neoplastic disease of the lymphatic tissues in men in Townsville, but not in the cane‐growing areas; and that, during the period 1968—1981, there was a significantly lower number of deaths from leukaemia (13 deaths; SMR, 49;P<0.01) in women over 60 years of age in the cane‐growing areas, which contrasted with a significantly greater number of deaths from leukaemia (61 deaths; SMR, 154;P<0.01) in men 60 years and over in the cane‐growing areas.

Sixteen persons with a wide range of disabilities were subjected to a formal scuba‐diver training course, after passing a medical and psychological assessment specific for divers. Subjects with brain damage and with impaired bladder and bowel control were included. The current general guidelines for the medical assessment of non‐disabled divers appear to be suitable for disabled persons, but additionally each particular disability demands careful individual assessment. Such assessment requires knowledge of diving and rehabilitative medicine and diving practice. The study supports the argument that scuba‐diving may improve the physical self‐concept of selected disabled persons. It is stressed that specialized diving supervision is essential for such people.

In a community‐based study of heart attack, which was conducted in the Hunter Region of New South Wales in 1979, the prognosis was found to be poorer for patients who had received therapy with diuretic agents before the index attack, compared with those who either had received no treatment or were treated with other antihypertensive agents. There was also some evidence of a better prognosis for overweight people or those of normal weight, compared with those whose body weight was below normal.

Over a five‐year period, 2267 patients attended a cardiac rehabilitation programme. Fourteen patients developed serious ventricular arrhythmias, and most of these had severe coronary artery disease with left ventricular dysfunction. Patients with known coronary artery disease should have medically supervised exercise programmes with an immediate access to resuscitation equipment.

A retrospective study of the outcome of postcoital intervention for the prevention of pregnancy in 201 women who attended the Victorian Family Planning Clinic from January 1982 to September 1983 is presented. Four pregnancies resulted from a total of 213 treatments performed. As a follow‐up assessment could only be carried out in 107 cases, the rate of failure of postcoital treatment according to the recommended regimen was estimated as 4%. The reasons for attendance and the methods of contraception involved are considered in general, and the four cases in which the treatment failed are described in more detail. Recommendations are made with regard to subsequent contraception.

A conversion reaction, presenting as an acute spinal‐cord injury, was diagnosed in 9.8% of new patients admitted to a spinal injury unit during the period from November 1982 to November 1983. There were eight men and one woman (mean age, 23 $pM 8 years). A history of previous episodes of conversion reaction was common in this group. Some patients had evidence of previous vertebral damage. Diagnosis of this condition is difficult, even for those who are familiar with patterns of spinal‐cord injuries. All patients were walking independently and had no sensory deficits at the time of discharge from hospital.
