AbstractA seroepidemiological study of the prevalence of antibodies to alphaviruses (Ross River [RRV], Sindbis [SIN]and Getan [GET] viruses) was carried out on 16 842 specimens of sera collected during 1981 and 1982 from individuals of all ages living in all health regions of New South Wales. Prevalence rates were found to be low in the major coastal cities of Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, and in the whole of the Tablelands. In coastal populations, the rates were highest in the far and mid North Coast zones (about 16%), and slightly lower in the south. The ratio of RRV:SIN antibodies was 62:1 in coastal populations. Antibody prevalence rates varied from 10%–20% in the Western Slopes, rising to 30%–40% in centres in the Western Plains; the RRV:SIN antibody ratio here was 11:1. The unexpectedly high infection rates, especially in the Western Plains, suggest that Ross River virus, in particular, may constitute a public health problem of hitherto unsuspected significance in New South Wales.

Survival rates for cancers of the lung, colon and female breast, and for invasive lesions of the cervix have been analysed according to age, place of residence, country of birth, socioeconomic status, and where applicable, by sex and histological type and were found to be negatively related to age. For patients with cancers of the colon and cervix, survival rates were lower in country residents than in those of metropolitan Adelaide. Low socioeconomic status was associated with a lower survival rate for patients with colonic cancers and female breast cancers; a similar trend was suggested for those with cancers of the cervix. Higher survival rates were found for patients with squamous cell carcinomas and adenocarcinomas of the lung, and mucinous tumours of the breast. Higher survival rates for patients with breast tumours were associated with small tumour size at diagnosis. In some overseas‐born populations, survival rates for patients with lung cancers and cervical cancers were higher than those in the Australian‐born population. This warrants further investigation.

Thirty patients in whom a peritrochanteric fracture of the femur was stabilized with a Harris intramedullary nail were studied retrospectively. The study showed an initially high complication rate and highlighted points of technique and selection which have led to improved results. In appropriate cases, this procedure is a fast, minimally traumatic, and secure method of internal fixation of peritrochanteric fractures.

In a gynaecological cancer survey of 1026 women aged 21 years and over in May 1967, 74 women were found to have cervical cytological changes (designated as mild atypia in 71), which were followed to April 1982. No case of cervical cancer was found (0.3 were expected on the basis of population rates). Six women had had hysterectomies (6.2 were expected on the basis of rates of hysterectomy in the region of the survey). Reports on cervical smears taken since January 1, 1980, were available for 46 (75%) of 61 women who were alive and had not had a hysterectomy. Of these, 11 showed mild atypia; the remainder were within normal limits.
