摘要:

Between 1914 and 1994, Australian surgery has undergone a period of unique growth and scientific revolution. It has been influenced by the effects of two world wars, two lesser engagements in Asia (Korea and Vietnam) and vast developments and social changes in the Australian Commonwealth. The pioneer surgeon, whose background was general practice, has evolved into today's member of a scientifically orientated professional body which is responsible for its own standards, training and management.

Geriatric medicine has been slow to evolve in Australia for bureaucratic and other reasons. The rapid increase in the aged population demands that a coordinated approach be taken in the future.

The last 80 years have seen enormous advances in the area ofwomen's health. Perhaps the most important have been the efforts to improve medical standards after the First World War and the development of hormone therapy ‐ specifically, the contraceptive pill, which has hadfar‐reaching effects on women's ability to control their bodies, their fertility and their place in society.

Anaesthesia in Australia has grown in 80 years from an area that had little clinical attraction to a major speciality in its own right, with contributions to the areas of intensive care, pain management, resuscitation, palliative care and trauma management.

Eighty years ago, psychiatrists believed that mental illnesses were caused by, among other things, excessive devotion to sport, the introduction ofphones and motor cars, illsorted marriages and perverted sexual intercourse. Psychiatric theories and institutions in Australia have come a long way since then.
