The development of adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity was determined cytochemically in sections from normal and decapitated pig fetuses. Cellular LPL activity was first evident in 60-day-old fetuses. Capillaries were stained for LPL activity in 85-day-old and older fetuses and in young pigs. Cellular synthesis of LPL and capillary staining were not concurrent events. LPL activity developed after adipocyte differentiation and after structural development of capillaries. The cellular and capillary staining of fat cell clusters throughout development and in decapitated fetuses indicated a possible inverse relationship between cellular synthesis of LPL and capability of capillaries to transport LPL to luminal sides. These observations indicate that LPL activity develops in a pattern quite distinct from that observed in vitro. This discrepancy may be due to the involvement of blood vessels in the in vivo developmental pattern.

127 abdominal aortas of children and adolescents aged 0–20 years were examined histomorphologically. The quantitative analysis gave the following results: (1) The intimal thickness increases continuously with age. The maximal intimal growth can be observed between the 1st and 3rd and the 12th and 19th year of age, respectively. (2) The media exhibits a similar increase in thickness with a maximal growth between the 1st and 3rd and in the 12th year. (3) The intima-media index rises rapidly from birth until the 3rd year, with a plateau thereafter, and then increases again between the 14th and 18th year. Vascular connections occurring between the adrenal gland and the kidney were investigated by using techniques of ligation of renal arteries followed by injection of trypan blue into the thoracic aorta. These connections, which course through the renal capsule to terminate at the renal corticomedullary junction, were confirmed in the dog. Using the same techniques in the monkey and human, vessels could be traced to the renal capsule but did not appear to penetrate this capsule.

Weibel-Palade bodies were observed in the neoendothelium and capillaries of vasa vasorum of autologous ‘venous patches’ grafted in the common carotid artery of the rat. These corpuscules varied in number and distribution but were most frequently found in the luminal area of endothelial cytoplasm. In venous patch neoendothelium, the shape, size and substructure of Weibel-Palade bodies were similar to those in other types of vascular endothelium. 摘要:
The pattern of arrangement of superficial veins in the cubital fossa was studied in 400 cubital fossae of 200 living persons from amongst the medical students and staff of the Medical School, University of Calabar, Nigeria. In the present study, the patterns of arrangement of the veins in the cubital fossa varied considerably from usual textbook descriptions. Five types of variations have been observed. The commonest pattern observed was the median vein of the forearm dividing into two branches, one joining the basilic and the other the cephalic vein.

Male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were used to see if increased, intermittent, compressive forces, produced by experimental bipedalism would have a compensatory effect on hypophysectomy – a situation known to inhibit bone growth. Half of the rats underwent amputation of both front legs at 10 days of age; and at 21 days of age, half of the normal and half of the bipedal rats underwent hypophysectomy. All rats were sacrificed at 55 days of age, and weighed. The femora and tibiae were removed, cleaned, fixed, weighed and measured. 摘要:
The synthesis and transfer of proteins from the Schwann cell cytoplasm to the myelin sheath and axon of chicken embryos have been investigated with electron microscope radioautography. At early time intervals after the intravenous injection of 3H-proline into 18-day-old chicken embryos, the newly synthesized proteins are mainly collected in the Schwann cell cytoplasm with a preponderance in the Golgi area. Later, the bulk of labeled proteins migrate along the myelin sheath and a small portion is transferred to the axon. Most of the transferred proteins are conveyed through the regions of inner and outer mesaxons.

Pregnant Sabra mice received 3 g phenobarbital per kilogram milled food from gestational days (GD) 9 to 18 as their only food source; control females received milled food. All the females were divided into three groups and injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 3H-thymidine on GD 13, 15 or 17. At 50 days of age the offspring were perfused with 10% neutral formalin and their brains removed and prepared for autoradiography. Matching sagittal sections of the offspring were selected for the study of the medial preoptic area (MPOA) of the hypothalamus. The total number of cells per section was not significantly different between males and females, however, there was a greater cellular packing density (cell/mm2) in females (p < 0.05). This sex difference disappeared in treated offspring, possibly due to a 76% decrease on GD 13 in the rate of cell proliferation in females (number of labeled cells but not in males (p < 0.001); the greatest decrease in the number of labeled cells occurred in the sexually dimorphic areas of the MPOA (p < 0.001). The area of the sagittal section of the MPOA did not differ significantly between sexes or treatments.
