AbstractHepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) was detected in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of five of nine leukemia patients with HBsAg‐positive sera. These five CSF samples were shown to be free of occult blood using a sensitive hemoglobin extraction technique. The presence of HBsAg in CSF was unrelated to cranial irradiation, prior lumbar punctures, or current chemotherapy. The findings indicate that many blood‐free CSF specimens from HBsAg‐positive patients, as well as all blood‐contaminated specimens, contain detectable HBsAg. This suggests that CSF from patients who are HBsAg‐positive should be handled with care, as it may be capable of trasmitting hepatitis B to health care personnel caring for these patients and laboratory personnel handling their

AbstractL‐asparaginase, a highly effective anti‐leukemic enzyme preparation, is now frequently being adminstered intramuscularly in order to decrease the incidence of severe sensitivity reactions. AbstractThyroid function was evaluated in a consecutively treated group of children and adolescents with Hodgkin disease who received incidental radiation to the thyroid gland. Ten of 27 (36.7%) were found to have elevated concentrations of thyroid‐stimulating hormone (TSH).Two groups of patients had an increased incidence of thyroid dysfunction — those who had not had a pretreatment lymphangiogram and those who were less than 13 years of age at the time of neck irradiation. AbstractEosinophilic granuloma of bone is an uncommon granulomatous process for which therapy recommendations vary considerably. Consequently, a survey of the world literature from 1940 to 1974 was undertaken in an attempt to develop more concrete guidelines. This survey revealed that the disease manifests itself primarily in males under 20 years of age of all races. The most common symptom is pain, with or without swelling. Multiple sites in a single case are frequent. The clinical course is generally benign, unlike Letterer‐Siwe disease or Hand‐Schuller‐Christian disease. A remission rate of 95% was noted, with relapses usually occurring as distant disease within the first year. Simple excision or curettage was the most common surgical procedure utilized, and radiotherapy doses varied widely. Excellent local control of the disease can be provided using conservative surgery, low‐dose irradiation, or both. Morbidity secondary to pathologic fracture or to overly aggressive treatment are the major concerns, not failure to control the

AbstractPrevention of epithelial cancers is needed, as the treatment of such cancers in the advanced state has failed. Vitamin A and its structural analogs called retinoids will prevent cancers of the lung, breast, bladder, stomach, and cervix in animals exposed to carcinogens. Synthetic retinoids offer less toxicity than natural retinoids and may be acceptable to human trials. Identification of a suitable group at risk for an epithelial cancer which might be reasonably expected to benefit from retinoids should precede planning of a clinical trial.
