摘要:
A study of the stratigraphy of Pleistocene deposits found on Svalbard in recent years has permitted researchers to outline the principal stages in the glaciation of the archipelago during the Middle and Upper Pleistocene and to correlate them with events in Northern Eurasia and North America. Traces of three glaciations can be clearly identified, corresponding to the Upper Riss (Billefjorden stage), Lower Wurm (Bellsund stage) and Upper Würm (Semmeldalen stage) in the European context. They are separated by two interstadial transgressions corresponding in time with the Eem‐Kazantsevo transgression (Kalypsobyen Interstadial) and the Kargin transgression (Kapp Layel Interstadial) in Europe and Siberia, the latter including the Paudorf and Bryansk phases (the Ekholm stage in Svalbard).

摘要:
The water resources, mass exchange, and the areas of ice formation zones in the glacier systems of the Arctic are estimated anew. Accumulation is determined from air temperature at the alimentation boundary. The time of the mass turnover in glacier systems and its role in the ocean regime are computed. A relation is established between the morphology of glaciation and atmospheric circulation. The role of the Greenland ice sheet in the hydrometeorological regime of the Arctic is stressed.

摘要:
The author examines the relationships between transport in the areas of recent development in the American North and the extreme natural and economic conditions, the influence of transport developments on the economic structure and economic specialization, and also special government policies with regard to providing transport in these areas. (The translation and notes are by William Barr, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon.)

摘要:
Two geomorphological types of ice shelves are distinguished: (a) land‐ice shelves freezing and melting at the base, and including most of the Antarctic ice shelves, for example, Ross Ice Shelf; (b) fast ice with active freezing at the base, for example, McMurdo Ice Shelf. The mechanism of exaration of the sea floor by the two types of ice shelves is examined, together with erosion rates and the nature of the exaration relief. A classification of unconsolidated deposits formed by ice shelves is offered.

摘要:
Seasonal temperature patterns above Antarctica are compared with relative sunspot numbers during the 19th and 20th solar activity cycles, which reached a maximum in 1957/58, a minimum in 1964 and another maximum in 1968/69. The reaction of the atmosphere in the Antarctic, like that in the Arctic, is found to reflect variations in solar activity, suggesting that such variations, which were very distinct in the 19th and 20th cycles, have the same impact on both polar regions.
