摘要:
During the past few years interest in the North and especially in the Arctic has increased noticeably throughout the world. Views as to the means, scale, and nature of developing the region are changing significantly. The reason for this lies primarily in the global changes in the environment itself, in attitudes to it, as well as in a re‐examination of many value priorities in the life of society and of man, and the advancement of social and ecological origins. The North is seen as a territorial‐ecological reserve. With the development of the economy of the North it is also being advanced as the last major storehouse of resources. Interest in the region has intensified amazingly on the international level; this has been enormously encouraged by the famous Murmansk initiatives of the Soviet government (in the fall of 1987) on collaboration in the North, especially in the Arctic. All of this has brought about the need for new approaches to the North, its resources, its area, and its global role. In the USSR the need for new approaches has also been seriously stimulated by the radical political and economic reforms which are being implemented in the country.

Direct sea ice exchange between the Arctic Basin and Baffin Bay occurs only via Nares Strait. Ice from the Arctic Basin entering Sverdrup Basin and Parry Channel does not penetrate east of 90–95° W, i.e., it remains within the approaches to the western limits of Lancaster and Jones sounds. The seasonal progress of ice discharge within the straits of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) is very clearly marked, but no definite trends are revealed in the interannual variations. The total annual discharges of ice from the Arctic Basin into the straits of the CAA comprise only 10–15% of the discharge through Fram Strait. But in the summer months the two are quite comparable. This emphasizes the need to take into account the ice exchange between the Arctic Basin and the straits of the CAA in investigating their hydrometeorological regime.

Studies of marginal glacial features in southeastern Kola Peninsula provide evidence that the eastern part of the northern Terskiye Keyvy ridge systems began to form between the Ponoy Ice Dome and the White Sea Ice Lobe, and later developed along the margin of the latter. The process most probably occurred throughout the whole of the Early Dryas. The second marginal belt (lying farther south) was also formed by the ice lobe which flowed across the White Sea basin, but is attributed to the Middle Dryas. Therefore for the first time data are presented which clearly indicate that marginal features corresponding to the Luga and Neva glacial stages were formed in the Kola Peninsula.

Analysis of long‐term trends in tree‐ring growth in Siberian larch near the northern treeline in the Polar Urals and in Turkestan juniper near the altitudinal treeline in the Southern Tyan'‐Shan’, in summer ablation on the IGAN Glacier in the Polar Urals and in glaciers in the mountains of Soviet Central Asia, and in mean patterns of atmospheric pressure and circulation reveal extremely interesting correlations. Thus, for example, years with unusually great tree‐ring growth in Siberian larch in the Polar Urals correlate with high frequency of occurrence of low‐pressure systems over the Kara Sea which result in a warm, relatively dry air flow over the Polar Urals, resulting in heavy ablation on the IGAN Glacier; these conditions also correlate with an “open”; navigation season, in terms of sea ice, in the Kara Sea. By contrast years with limited tree growth correlate with a predominance of pressure systems giving rise to northerly winds, heavy cloud cover and heavy summer snowfall, resulting in reduced ablation on the glaciers of the Polar Urals; these conditions also correlate with more severe navigation conditions (due to ice) in the Kara Sea. Similar correlations are demonstrated in connection with the patterns of tree‐ring growth, pressure patterns and glacier mass balances in the Southern Tyan'‐Shan’.
