摘要:
Caplow (1954) and Vollmer and Mills (1966) have suggested that occupational associations, one aspect of professionalization, frequently operate so as to restrict entry to the occupation and enhance occupational incomes. Four hypotheses from the literature on occupational associations are explicitly developed and tested. No evidence is found that licensing per se affects occupational incomes. There is weak support for the argument that public representation on licensing boards tends to reduce occupational incomes. And there is rather strong support for the hypothesis that licensing is used to restrict entry and enhance occupational incomes. In 5 of 6 occupations, there is the expected negative correlation between the proportion of applicants who actually receive licenses, and occupational incomes. Finally, to the extent an occupation is professionalized, occupational income tends to be independent of across-state variations in median income.

摘要:
Registration data on intergroup marriages in Singapore for 1962–69 are analyzed to study assimilation patterns. The need for standardized data which are not affected by group size and sex ratios is stressed and a probability index of intermarriages between groups is generated. The Chinese are the most isolated of groups while the Indians and Malays, among the major groups, are the closest on the basis of this index. Assortative mating rather than random intermarriage is occurring and assimilation patterns appear to be of a stratified rather than a general-mixture or melting-pot character. No evidence of change in these patterns was observed during the 1960s. The advantage of using standardized data for the analysis of intermarriages between different groups is emphasized.

摘要:
In a recent paper Smith proposes a solution to the longstanding problem of multivariate analysis with ordinal data, but it is argued that Smith has not dealt adequately with the question of empirically relevant interpretation and that the problem remains unsolved. It is proposed further that the fundamental difficulty obstructing work on the problem is the lack of a clear, precise formulation of multivariate ordinal relations and hypotheses.
