摘要:
In this article the effects of special-interest campaign contributions, party, and constituency (mediated by issue visibility on prolabor and probusiness legislative outcomes) are examined for the 99th Congress. Labor contributions have marginally greater impact than business contributions on legislative outcomes, although labor money “counts” less for high-visibility labor issues. Labor money also has more of an impact against probusiness voting. Party is the most important predictor of legislative outcomes and is not conditioned by issue visibility. One interpretation of the findings is that labor is marginally better than business in achieving its goals. An alternative interpretation is that business has less of a stake than labor in legislative outcomes because of its greater involvement in politics outside of the electoral process, which partly explains labor's success on some issues of marginal importance and its failure on more significant ones.

摘要:
In this article we investigate the impact of selected political and economic processes on the well-being of domestic populations in samples of 41 to 110 nations. More specifically, we assess the impact on basic needs provision of regime ideology, state strength, multinational corporate investment, trade dependency, and position in the world economy. Our analysis synthesizes a literature that has focused on either international economic or intranational political processes but has not explored the relationship between them. In particular, we extend the work of Moon and Dixon (1985) by examining the impact on basic needs provision of both regime characteristics and state strength, which they did investigate, and the penetration of multinational corporations, trade dependency, and position in the world economy, which they did not.

摘要:
How dependent are the alleged benefits of religious faith on one's orientation to religion? How well do believers more focused on faith as an instrument for achieving these benefits succeed by their own account, compared to those more focused on ultimate religious truth and content? Recalling past theoretical work by Merton, Kolb, and Schneider, as well as the classic survey of popular religious literature by Schneider and Dornbusch, the hypothesis that instrumental approaches to religion are self-defeating is developed, tested, and sustained using a sample of Methodist-church members. Implications for court cases related to religion in the public schools are explored.

摘要:
The founding of the Old Order Amish Steering Committee provides an unusual opportunity to identify environmental factors that may pressure collectivities to formally organize. Amish communities, despite a normative stance antithetical to central authority and hierarchy, felt compelled to create a national organization as the best means of effectively articulating their views to a proliferating array of government bureaucracies. The Amish's perceived need to create the Steering Committee makes clear that the legal environment may be coercive independent of the substantive character of particular laws. The mere pervasiveness of government standards, codes, regulations, and programs forces collectivities subject to them to adopt bureaucratic structures. The Steering Committee's evolution confirms the pervasiveness and decisiveness of the legal infrastructure, features only sporadically appreciated in the organizational literature.

摘要:
Six geometric surfaces in three-dimensional space and their corresponding equations are recommended as plausible linear or nonlinear models for explaining various discrepancy effects. Researchers are encouraged to compare such alternative models when developing hypotheses, rather than arbitrarily selecting a regression equation that happens to work.

摘要:
Though the approach recommended by Schumm et al. should be useful in estimating discrepancy effects, it is not a general solution, since it is not applicable when any important component of an estimated effect is linear. Linear and nonlinear discrepancy effects are fundamentally different and must be approached in fundamentally different ways.
