摘要:
Special census tabulations obtained for Rhode Island permit analysis of the interrelation between residence, commuting, and migration. Although the central cities provide job opportunities for persons living well beyond their boundaries, most people in the suburbs and the outlying areas live fairly close to their place of work. Moreover, within the respective zones, purely local migration takes place independent of changes in job location. For those migrating greater distances, the greater the distance moved, the less strong is the tendency to retain jobs in the area of origin. Nevertheless, a substantial number of people migrate a considerable distance without changing job location. Although this tendency is most pronounced in the case of city to suburb migration, it operates at greater distances and in reverse direction as well. By making residential mobility possible without concomitant change in job location, this commuting pattern results in an increased volume of migration.

摘要:
Using the 1960 Census Tract data for Philadelphia, we examine the degree of residential congregation and segregation of the six principal “national origin” groups in the city, relating the patterns of congregation and segregation in turn to a variety of socioeconomic characteristics of the tracts. The intercorrelation matrix of these national origin groups forms a Guttman simplex with several interesting “inversions” that, in turn, predict “inversions” on selected socioeconomic characteristics of the tracts. In a technical appendix, we consider the relative merits of the Duncan index of dissimilarity and our use ofphicorrelation coefficients for the purposes of our particular problem.

摘要:
This paper attempts to identify some of the economic and demographic factors responsible for the growth of southern metropolitan areas during the 1950's. Several basic patterns of relationships are established tentatively through application of the Simon-Blalock technique of employing partial correlations in alternative models. Past metropolitan growth appears to operate both directly and indirectly through net migration and suburban growth to influence metropolitan growth. Increased family income acts indirectly on metropolitan growth through income level and labor force growth. Past rates of growth also operate directly and indirectly through net migration and increased family income. Finally, past rates of growth influence present growth through their influence on income level and increase in income.
