Many studies have examined support for integration or separatism among racial or ethnic groups. Yet most have ignored other reactions to intergroup contact, a primary one being that of avoidance. In this paper the responses of junior and senior high school adolescents to a series of attitude items are examined in a factor analysis. Two clear and distinct response tendencies emerged, one an integration-separatism dimension and the other, an approach-avoidance dimension. The social correlates of both dimensions are presented and the implications of the two dimensions for continued research on race and ethnic relations are briefly discussed.

Using data collected among Mexican-American adolescents, this paper tests a model positing an effect of ethnic consciousness on system blame, and an effect of system blame on political leftism. For the sample as a whole, results support the model, although the effect of system blame on leftism is weak. Further analysis reveals an interactive relationship such that system blame has a significant effect on leftism among respondents whose father's occupation is not low (nonmarginals), but no effect among respondents whose father's occupation is low (marginals). The interaction is apparently due to a greater relevance of system blame items to nonmarginal respondents.

Social scientists have long engaged in studying the racial transition of neighborhoods in urban areas. One aspect of such change that is often debated is the tipping point phenomenon. In this paper an attempt is made to formulate a model which captures this phenomenon and when it is tested against alternative models the results support the tipping point position. Furthermore, the model proposed is shown to be superior to simple extrapolation as a means, which would be useful to planners and others, for predicting the direction of future neighborhood change.

New criteria for indexes of residential segregation are developed. It is argued that a pattern of random segregation rather than complete desegregation should be used as a baseline for measuring segregation. It is shown that any index whose relationship to one baseline is independent of the proportion black in a city, necessarily has a dependent relationship with respect to the other baseline. The index of dissimilarity is adjusted to serve as a measure of deviation from random segregation. Eta-square, which was shown by Duncan and Duncan to depend on the proportion black, is shown to be independent of the proportion black when random segregation is used as a baseline. It is argued that segregation should be measured from a situation of complete desegregation when its effects are of concern, but that it should be measured from random segregation when its causes are being analyzed.

A Proportional Reduction in Error (PRE) intreptretation for Γ2, the square of Daniels' generalized correlation coefficient is presented. This general interpretation theoretically consolidates the diverse PRE interpretations for the squared symmetric bivariate measures of association within the generalized product-moment system. These statistics include Pearson'sr2, Spearman'sρ2, Kendall'sτ{skb/2}, (φ2and various other pure and hybrid special cases of P. Since Γ2=π{skyx/2}, this general interpretation also holds for the special cases of the squared bivariate path coefficient.
