摘要:
Recent evidence from Canada and Sweden indicates that cohabitation prior to marriage significantly increases the risk of subsequent marital dissolution. In this article we present results testing the hypothesis that cohabitation increases marital disruption in the United States. We find that premarital cohabitation increases the risk of subsequent marital instability. However, the effect of cohabitation can be attributed to the fact that cohabitants have spent more time in union than noncohabitants. Once total length of union is accounted for, there is no difference in marital disruption between cohabitants and noncohabitants. We argue that subsequent research comparing cohabitants and noncohabitants with respect to marital behaviors that are duration dependent should account for the total amount of time spent in union.

摘要:
A mapping in the mid-1970s of “the South” and “Dixie,” based on entries beginning with those words in metropolitan telephone directories, is replicated in the mid-1980s. For “the South” results are roughly the same, although the northern and western boundaries have moved slightly south and east, and southern Florida has dropped out. In addition, parts of North Carolina and Arkansas and all of peninsular Florida have dropped out of the South's core area, by this measure. For “Dixie” the erosion is more extreme. At even moderate levels significant parts of the 1976 region are no longer included; at relatively high levels Dixie simply disappears as a coherent region. In particular, this measure excludes from Dixie even parts of the Deep South, including most of Alabama.

摘要:
Industrialization is generally believed to undermine the rural extended family household, but this study of Taiwanese farm households finds the contrary to be true. An analysis of 274 townships in 1960 and 1970 reveals that farm household complexity is positively associated with industrialization as measured by the proportion of the labor force in nonagricultural occupations, both cross-sectionally and over time. The propensity of farm families to combine into extended units is influenced by the availability of productive resources, whether agricultural or industrial. In the classical case, industry undermines the extended family by drawing kinsmen into cities; in Taiwan, where industry has grown up in proximity to family farms, the extended household has thrived. Ethnographic evidence suggests that the semi-agricultural extended households are less patriarchal and more egalitarian; still, industrial employment itself does not seem inimical to extended living arrangements.

摘要:
Using data from a survey of Nashville, Tennessee, residents, we show that public beliefs about the causes of homelessness emphasize structural forces and bad luck over individualistic factors. Our analysis also demonstrates: 1) the complex intrapersonal organization of these beliefs, 2) the degree to which they are influenced by one's social statuses, religious and political values, and exposure to homelessness, and 3) their implications for policy attitudes.
