摘要:
AbstractAlthough Europe is not showing a renaissance in competitiveness, there has been considerable progress in laying the ground work to upgrade performance. The ‘twin track’ policies (supportive and liberal) remain appropriate despite the set-backs of this last year's recession. Europe needs to keep its markets open to competition from other countries, and to build a more ‘co-operative’ style of capitalism.

摘要:
AbstractAn essential starting point in creating a New World Order is the Triad of North America, western Europe and East Asia. In economic terms, parity has increased during the 1970s and 1980s, although Japan has supremacy in industrial dynamism. In military terms, the USA dominates as was witnessed in the Gulf War. Economic development is essential as a global security strategy but it tips the balance of power within the Triad: will Japan and the USA accept this? Do they have any alternative?

摘要:
AbstractDuring the lifetime of SPRU, the emphasis in science and technology policies has shifted from an essentially science-push framework in the 1950s, through a phase of preoccupation with economic growth and management of innovation in the 1960s, and on to a wider concern with the environment and quality of life since the 1970s. Within this context, some quality of life issues are discussed which are only indirectly related to economic growth: civil liberty, quality, variety and choice in new products and services, and social equity. A number of examples are given of changes in trend which are influenced by, and sometimes closely related to, changes in science and technology, which give some grounds for hope.
