AbstractThe designated successor to fossil fuels is nuclear fission/fusion and that turns out to be problematic. Alternative Energy Systems have great potential but political forces seem to be hampering their development and introduction. The technologies are flexible in their use and scale of operation. The learning curve will not be short but neither will it be as long and as costly as nuclear power. It is time that this is recognised and some serious rethinking takes place in what presently passes for energy policies both in the industrialised countries and in the Third World.

AbstractEnergy supply plays an important role for most societies. However, depending on the development stage, local resources, system choice and several other factors, suitable energy supply solutions may differ from society to society. Optimal solutions may depend on the availability of energy technologies that take a long time to develop. For this reason, energy planning and policy formulation call for a comprehensive assessment of existing technologies, as well as unbiased evaluations of the need for new technology development considered appropriate for the future energy supply systems of individual societies.

AbstractRenewable energy technology is investigated and some policy issues drawn out using the Severn Tidal Barrage proposal as a case study. Many advocates of renewable energy sources believe that they could be introduced in a modular, planned way and the Central Electricity Generating Board has said they could accept a 20% contribution from these sources without operational problems.However, renewables are often forced to compete with nuclear power which is backed by powerful interests, and there is a large imbalance in government financial resources for the two. Renewable energy faces an uphill fight even if allied with some elements within the private sector as in the Severn Barrage proposals.

摘要:
AbstractThe 1983 Energy Act in the UK should have paved the way for small-scale private schemes especially the cogeneration of heat and power. Two demonstration projects were set up in Streatham in 1983 and Camberwell in 1986. Experience from these has shown that anticipated cost savings are difficult to achieve. The principle factors are maintenance and reliability problems and the unfavourability of the tariff structure.The analysis is very sensitive to small changes and if the current economic climate were to alter there is every indication that small-scale packaged cogeneration of heat and power would find a place in the UK energy market, making the economic and environmental benefits of energy-efficient electricity production a reality.

AbstractUntil recently it was thought natural for energy sources to develop from the individual gathering fuel to a centralised system for the generation of electricity. Since the oil crisis this has changed and India has investigated the use of alternative renewable energy sources which, by their very nature, are more localised. The widespread effort is, however, coordinated nationally and has considerable financial resources available. Described here is the Indian experience with such resources as biogas, bio mass, energy forests and solar energy.

摘要:
AbstractThere has been a resistance in the UK to investigate the conservation of energy as a cost effective alternative to new supply capacity. There are techniques available and being used in the USA and Norway to do the calculations. The payback period for energy conservation measures is much less than for new supply and can provide a real rate of return of 15%.The conclusion is that a misallocation of resources is occurring in the UK and the government should require the utilities to undertake supply versus demand calculations. It is in all our economic, social and environmental interests for those sums to be done and the conclusions reached and acted upon.

AbstractThis paper explores the non-nuclear options for supply side dominated electricity systems. The important questions are of emphasis and approach to the future. For instance, electricity demand could be reduced by around 10% by investments in efficient industrial motors, commercial lighting and domestic appliances and they would offer payback periods of four years or less.The favoured solution to the electricity supply question is of a mix of options. Given the availability of these options in the UK there is no need to have nuclear power with its substantial risks.
