AbstractThe European Commission has just proposed four multiannual research programmes concerning respectively thermonuclear fusion and plasma physics, biology and health protection, environment research and the setting up of a Community Bureau of Reference. Some 335 million units of account (1 u.a. = approximately US $1.3) are requested by the Commission for these four programmes. Two of these programmes are discussed in detail below.

AbstractFor 13 successive years China has achieved bumper harvests and has realized self-sufficiency in grain. Through self-reliance, it has fundamentally solved the problem of feeding its near 800 million people. One of the important reasons for what it has achieved is that, in the 25 years since the founding of New China, the construction of water conservation projects has been carried out on a large scale.
