摘要:
The paper describes the use of a multitransputer system for the implementation of highperformance vector control strategies for AC induction motors. These strategies constitute a complex real-time signal processing system and, as such, highlight the advantages and disadvantages of using parallelism for real-time motor control. The assessment of the transputer performance is felt to be significant, as it is shown that a generalised motor drive control ler exhibits some implicit parallel characteristics within its structure. The extent to which parallelism, and the transputer in particular, should be used for either development or commercial drive systems is therefore discussed.

摘要:
One of the obstacles to the more extensive use of nonlinear models in the control of highly nonlinear systems, such as chemical processing equipment, is the computational difficulty of solving the relevant nonlinear differential algebraic equations in real time. Transputer systems offer sufficient power to enable these equations to be handled rapidly and are now cheap enough to enable their implementation as dedicated control room equipment to be considered. Feedforward/feedback control of a nonlinear process, a distillation column, has been simulated on a Meiko transputer system to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The effective use of parallel computers requires that parallelism be exploited by choice of problem decomposition. A strategy which maximises parallelisation in the simulation of a distillation column is described.

The design of a hardware accelerator for supporting CACSD computations is considered in relation toH∞design. The key algorithms are identified and parallel solutions formulated. The speedup of these techniques is then assessed with respect to trial implementations on a network of transputers.

摘要:
A model-based fault diagnostic procedure is proposed for an eddy-current test instrument which utilises the multiple model estimation algorithm (MMEA). This algorithm essentially consists of a set of Kalman filters and is an ideal candidate for realisation by parallel-processing techniques. A practical instrument has been developed, consisting of a commercially available eddycurrent test instrument linked to a parallel processor consisting of an array of 4 transputers. A set of tubular metal samples, with known inner and outer wall defects, has been fabricated to enable the performance of the experimental instrument to be evaluated, and some practical results are given in the paper.

摘要:
The paper discusses the problem of tracking multiple targets from noisy measurement data. One possible solution, a branching or track splitting algorithm, is described in detail, and it is shown how the multiple tracking filters required can be distributed on parallel processors. Simulation results are given for specific scenarios obtained using both a transputer network and several Sun workstations. The paper concludes by discussing the merits of the parallel-processing procedures used.

摘要:
The paper reviews published systolic algorithms for both standard and square-root Kalman filtering. The formation of these complex arrays from simpler ones for matrix computations, including multiplication, backsubstitution, orthogonal decomposition and the Schur complement, is described. The Kalman filter arrays are compared in terms of the number of parallel computations required and the speed and efficiency of the algorithm.

摘要:
The robot control problem is discussed with regard to controller implementation on a multitransputer array. Some high-performance aspects required of such controllers are described, with particular reference to robot force control. The implications for the architecture required for controllers based on computed torque are discussed and an example is described. The idea of treating a transputer array as a virtual bus is put forward for the implementation of fast real-time controllers. An example is given of controlling a Puma 560 industrial robot. Some of the practical considerations for using transputers for such control are described.

摘要:
Parallel processing is often employed in real-time control systems to reduce execution times. The paper, however, investigates the potential of parallel processing, and one device, in particular, the Inmos transputer, in the design of a fault-tolerant high-integrity computer module for gas-turbine engine control. Introducing multiple processors into a control system has the potential to render that system less reliable in an operational sense, than a conventional single processor implementation. However, attention to system design can, in fact, exploit parallel-processing capability to result in improved reliability. While three-lane voting systems are commonly favoured in avionics systems, owing to hardware implementation constraints, gas-turbine engine controllers are generally realised as two-lane systems. Transputer system configurations are devised in an attempt to overcome this constraint. In particular, an ‘overlapping triad’ topology is investigated in detail, and both strength and weaknesses of the present transputer architecture are revealed.
