摘要:
A capacitance transducer with a periodic electrode structure is described for the measurement of particle velocity in particulate flows. The electrodes are in the form of interdigital combs deposited on an alumina substrate, and the expected capacitance variation when particles pass over the transducer is found from numerical field calculations. The effect of substrate thickness and the influence of screening electrodes is examined using the same method. An experimental system is described, and a method of calculating particle velocity from the mean frequency of the power spectrum of the transducer signal is examined theoretically. Examples of waveforms and power spectra from the experimental system are given, and the errors in the velocity estimate, which in practice are less than 5%, are compared with the theoretical results.

摘要:
In the paper, the regulation of nonminimum systems using a nonlinear minimum-variance control strategy is considered. The relationship between output variance and control limit of a saturating actuator is investigated. Both ultimatum simulation studies and an approximate analysis based on the statistical linearisation of the nonlinearity are presented. The results of these studies demonstrate that a minimum exists on this relationship. The connection between the use of a nonlinear controller and a suboptimal linear control law is discussed.

摘要:
The paper describes a method for the design of a multivariable self-tuning controller and presents the results of simulations using this controller. The method uses state-space techniques to assign the closed-loop system poles to prespecified locations. The state vector is made up of process input and output values, so that state estimation is unnecessary. Unity closed-loop gain in steady state is ensured by an additional controller term, and offsets are removed by a separate integral action.

摘要:
A unified approach to model reduction and control analysis of weakly coupled discrete systems is presented. Mode separation is expressed in terms of inequalities relating norms of system submatrices. Two approaches are considered: two time scale and modal aggregation, and their equivalence is pointed out. State feedback design is implemented using independent gain matrices.

摘要:
Systems identification trials are described for determining the dynamics involved in drug-induced paralysis. The aim is to provide automatic control of levels of muscle relaxation in anaethetised patients undergoing surgery. A linearised model has been successfully identified giving combined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters. The-model has implications for the design of feedback controllers, and simulations involving the use of Smith predictors are presented. Feedforward control is also considered to allow for perturbations in paralysis caused by general anaesthetic drugs used to induce unconsciousness.
