Physical training in children between 12 and 14 years (9 h weekly of gymnastics) increases excitability of motor nerve fibres as measured by short electrical square pulses of constant current applied through skin electrodes. The effect is highly significant for motor fibres to the biceps brachia of boys. Two possible explanations are considered: (1) a decreased conductance of shunt pathways through non-nervous tissue; (2) changes of electrical parameters of motor nerve fibres.

A 49-year-old female patient developed a syndrome of diffuse muscular rigidity associated with the symptoms of a mild polyradiculitis. The muscular rigidity was differentiated from that observed in stiff-man syndrome (spindle myotonia). Proprioceptive reflexes and sensitivity to noise were absent. The increased muscle tonus was found to be due to pathologic spontaneous activity of intact motor units, disappearing only slowly after administration of procaine to the nerve. In contrast to spindle myotonia, the γ-motoneurons did not seem to be affected. The disease process might have induced a parabiotic reaction in the sensory nerve roots. Diazepam and CIBA-34’647 Ba (a derivative of γ-aminobutyric acid) induced relaxation of muscles. This occurred, however, less rapidly than in cases of spindle myotonia. The study of statistical correlations between the occurrence of muscle atrophy of central origin following brain tumors and the laterality of the lesion showed a right cerebral dominance for muscle trophicity.

The clinical syndrome and the arterio-graphical findings in seven patients with a primitive trigeminal artery are described. The primitive trigeminal artery is associated with other congenital anomalies, usually of the vascular system. A large primitive trigeminal artery can be associated with hypoplastic vertebral arteries and absence of posterior communicating arteries. In such cases the brainstem circulation may depend on the primitive trigeminal artery. The clinical significance of such a situation is discussed.

The authors studied, with complex examinations, 180 cases of spasmophilia, 12 of them with electropolygraphic examinations of sleep. They found serious disturbances in the organisation of sleep and also numerous discharges of various aspects appearing mostly in B or C phases of sleep. The authors think that these discharges originate from the oral region of the reticular formation; the particular reactivity of the reticular formation of spasmophilic patients give to these discharges an epileptic aspect, the respective person not being necessarily a true epileptic.
