摘要:
Fifty-one brains showing lacunae and 30 with cribriform cavities have been identified out of 191 examined brains. A histologic and immunohistochemical study with the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method for glial fibrillary acidic protein has been carried out in selected cases. The number, site, associated arterial lesions and the microscopic appearance of lacunae and cribriform cavities are reported. Lacunae are small cavities usually, but not always due to softenings; cribriform cavities are dilatations of the perivascular space. Two types of cribriform cavities have been identified, according to the histological appearance of the surrounding tissue: type 1 with normal and type 2 with rarefied and abnormally gliotic surrounding nervous tissue. Sixteen cases showing a cribriform state in the basal ganglia exhibited a pseudobulbar palsy or extrapyramidal rigidity. Pseudobulbar palsy of striate form or parkinsonism may be ascertained in some cases only by histological and immunohistochemical examination.

摘要:
We have used single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and the radioisotope [123I]-iodoamphetamine to study 16 patients with cortical and central cerebral infarctions. In 12 cases SPECT, in addition to changes at the site of infarction, showed areas of deficient uptake in other regions of the brain. Diaschisis as well as infarctions, not detected on the transmission computed tomography scanning, seem to explain these findings.

摘要:
In human and animal brain microvessels beta-adrenergic receptors have been identified which are suggested to subserve the regulation of capillary function in both physiological and pathological conditions. Brain tumors are supplied by vessels that differ from those supplying normal cerebral tissue in various structural and functional parameters. In order to study the characteristics of brain tumor microcirculation, we have investigated the presence of beta-adrenergic receptors in capillaries isolated from different types of neoplasms using the specific radioligand 125I-iodocyanopindolol (ICYP). The microvessels were isolated and prepared by albumin flotation and glass bead filtration from normal and pathological tissues. No ICYP-specific binding was detected in the microvessels of tumors of glial origin, while capillaries obtained from meningiomas and neurinomas showed, like the normal brain, a specific binding of the radioligand. The data indicate that the regulation of capillary function in glial tumors differs from that of normal cerebral tissue and extraparenchymal tumors, thus indicating an impaired control of the vascular permeability.

摘要:
The main ‘acute-phase proteins’ were determined in serum of 20 patients with presenile Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and compared with values in 18 age-matched healthy control subjects. Following parameters were evaluated: α1-antitrypsin (αAT), haptoglobin (HPT), transferrin (TRF), acidic α1-glycoprotein (A αG), ceruloplasmin (CER), α2-macroglobulin (αMG), C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin (ALB), together with the immunoglobulins IgG, IgM and IgA, and some of the most significant factors of the classic (C3, C4) and alternative (properdin factor B) pathways of complement activation. The results showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of aAT (p < 0.001), CER (p < 0.001) and of all the complement factors studied (p < 0.005). The levels of other acute-phase proteins (HPT, TRF, A αG, αMG, CRP, ALB) and immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA) were similar in AD patients and normal controls. These results give rise the possibility that these elements indicate an altered immunoregulation compatible with chronic cell damage and/or chronic inflammation conditions. Moreover, the increased level of αAT can be related to the low production of interleukin-1 (IL-1) reported in AD, which supports the hypothesis of a relative derangement of the macrophage function in preseni

摘要:
A 20-year-old woman with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) suddenly experienced two episodes of diabetic coma. She was studied to determine whether diabetes mellitus (DM) resulted from insulin resistance or from an insulin secretion abnormality, using the euglycemic glucose clamp technique and the glucagon tolerance test. She had a deficiency of insulin secretion from beta cells. It is important to recognize in practice the onset of DM in patients with mitochondrial myopathy. We would suggest that a genetic linkage or mitochondrial dysfunction may be responsible for the association of both disease states.
