A patient with cerebral Schistosoma mansoni schistosomiasis is described. The infection presented as a cerebral tumor, and the patient did not have the usual hepatic or intestinal symptoms of this disease. The computed tomography (CT) findings in histologically proven cerebral schistosomiasis are reported. The pathological CT findings developed at a late stage of the disease, and the CT scans were normal at a time when the EEG recordings were pathological.

A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) in a young patient who suffered from an acute cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is presented. The diagnosis was reached following the isolation of the virus from the urine and the demonstration of high titers of both IgM and IgG antibodies in the serum. In contrast to previous cases in which GBS was merely associated with positive serology for CMV, but with almost no clinical manifestations of CMV mononucleosis syndrome, our patient had a full blown picture of acute CMV mononucleosis, including peripheral lymphocytosis, splenomegaly, hepatic involvement and hemolysis. A 65-year-old woman with known breast carcinoma developed headaches, followed shortly by disequilibrium, vertical diplopia and dysarthria. Cranial computerized tomography (CCT) demonstrated a dense, irregularly enhancing pontine lesion with associated mass effect. In 11 female patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, clinical and or electrophysiological signs of a polyneuropathy were found in 9 cases. 8 patients had clinical and 7 patients electrophysiological signs of a polyneuropathy. We derive from the significant correlations between neurographic and metabolic parameters that a hepatic disorder, a disorder of lipid and protein metabolism strongly contribute to the development of polyneuropathy in primary biliary cirrhosis.

A simultaneous blind study of posture and eye movements was undertaken in 9 subjects at risk for Huntington’s disease. After quantitative evaluation of the postural and electrooculographic abnormalities, the subjects were subdivided into subgroups, and the results were compared to test the relationship between the two methods. A dose-dependent elevation of striatal γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) level was found under chronic treatment with haloperidol, a classical neuroleptic drug. The unaltered GABA level in the substantia nigra is compatible with the existence of GABAergic interneu-rons in the striatum, which are inhibited by the afferent dopaminergic innervation to the striatum. The glutamate levels of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and different brain regions investigated were not significantly changed by haloperidol. By contrast, we found in an earlier investigation with sulpiride, an atypical neuroleptic drug, a changed glutamate level in the striatum and the CSF and an unaltered GABA level. A case of hemangiopericytic meningioma of the pineal region is reported. We discuss the origin of meningiomas in this region and their histological nature. The rapid recurrence in situ of the tumor in this particular case seems to confirm the need to complement surgery with radiation therapy.

A critical analysis of cases of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and chorea is presented. Choreatic movements occurred early in the course of the disease in most cases; the duration varied from several days to 3 years. No sex predominance was found and no relationship could be demonstrated between chorea and other neurological signs, or between chorea and other SLE manifestations. Also, the neuropathological findings offered no simple explanation for the emergence of chorea. Immunological pathomechanisms might be present.
