摘要:
We present and discuss a physics demonstration, similar to, but distinct from, the ballistic-pendulum demonstration, one that illustrates all three conservation laws of mechanics (for energy, momentum, and angular momentum) simultaneously.

摘要:
An apparatus for producing a rotating liquid parabolic mirror and a laser inclinometer for measuring the slope of the mirror at a given radial distance from the optical axis are described. Several first-year optics experiments that can be performed with the apparatus are described.

摘要:
This paper describes how to connect the concepts of kinematics and dynamics with everyday life experience by using rollerblades in teaching mechanics. We describe seven experiments that were performed by the author while teaching general physics and science courses at Rutgers University.

摘要:
I use to dread the introductory lecture on measurement that I gave to all my general-education physics classes (nonscience majors). Now this lecture is one of the highlights of the course. My solution is to ask the class to estimate the length of time it would take for the occupants of the classroom to use up “all the available air.”

摘要:
Parallel wires, carrying currents in the same direction, attract each other. The student who understands this message on the theoretical level knows the Biot-Savart law and a couple of manifestations of the right-hand rule. On the other hand, Roget’s spiral provides direct evidence of the direction of the interaction between the two wires.

摘要:
The force exerted by a vertically falling chain being brought to rest on a horizontal surface can be measured as a function of time using “off-the-shelf” hardware and software. The results confirm the prediction based on impulse and momentum considerations.

摘要:
Without a spectrometer, the refractive index of a liquid can be measured as a function of temperature by means of a laser beam, meterstick, and triangular tank. The estimated error is ±0.001.
