摘要:
The news report of a balloonist floating far above his intended altitude (in a lawnchair!) provides motivation for exploring the behavior of ideal gases and their implications for the thermodynamic properties of the Earth’s atmosphere.

摘要:
In discussions about science education, we often hear and read references to two eras of reform: the first associated with launching of Sputnik in October of 1957 and the second prompted by the publication ofNation at Riskin 1983. Having been deeply involved in the first science project of the first era, namely the Physical Science Study Committee (PSSC) course in physics, now in its seventh edition, and following today's activities closely, I will try to describe the “what's” and “how's” of the PSSC as a representative of the first era and to compare them with today's reform.

摘要:
What do you with a helium-filled balloon after you bring it home? Charge it by rubbing it with a wool cloth, and then raise and lower it in a dark room beneath a fluorescent lamp. This will cause the lamp to emit flashes of light!

摘要:
The flow of materials and energy is covered under a variety of topics in a first-year physics text. However, the underlying mathematical connection is seldom emphasized. In this note, the equations that describe steady flow opposed by a restrictive mechanism are compared.

摘要:
Crawl out from under the electric blanket, find that the house temperature is just right, pour some hot coffee from the electric percolator and later, in your car, use the turn indicator. Already four times you have enjoyed the benefits of bimetal. You can’t go through a day without it. So what is it?

摘要:
The development of remotely operated telescopes has provided a means for giving students in undergraduate astronomy courses valuable experience in making telescopic observations. This paper alerts physics teachers to the opportunities available on the web.

摘要:
I will restrict my comments to physics topics in theNational Science Education Standards(NSES), which seem to have some useful recommendations in other areas since they deal with many phases of education, including teacher education, assessment, school systems, content, relations to society and technology, and so on.
