摘要:
The different faculties and powers of the mind are not simultaneously but successively developed, with some periods of life better suited to particular acquirements than others. We ought to follow the order of nature, and to adapt the instruments to the age and mental stature of the pupil. Memory, imitation, imagination, and the faculty of forming mental habits should be the objects of early education. Development of language skills and rote drill in arithmetic should be the principal and prominent object of the primary or common school. The higher principles of science can only be thoroughly understood by a mind more fully matured, for the judgment and the reasoning powers are of slower growth. Of serious consequence is the endeavor to invert the order of nature, and attempt to impart those things which cannot be taught at an early age, and to neglect those which at this period of life the mind is well adapted to receive.
