The fourth state of matter, the "plasma state," although relatively rarely found at the surface of the earth, is the most commonly found state of matter when the known universe is considered. The plasma state, consisting of a neutral collection of electrons and positive ions may have a very wide range of densities. The production and properties of this state are described. Plasmas are of particular interest now because of the possibility of initiating neuclear fusion in them but they also appear in phenomena ranging from those found in a neon sign, a lightning stroke, the ionosphere about the earth, shock waves, and the compressed layer of hot gas around an astronaut's capsule as the comes back through the earth's atmosphere.

Through the courtesy of the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company of Reading, Massachusetts we are able to publish one of the opening chapters of theFeynman Lectures in Physics. This is a new book based on the lectures given by Dr. Feynman in the introductory course at the California Institute of Technology. A second chapter of this refreshingly different but delightfully rigorous introduction to college physics will be published later.

A brief survey of the English educational system is followed by details of how physics teaching of 11–16 and 16–18 and 19 year-old pupils is organized. This includes sample examination questions, details of laboratories, textbooks, and other teaching aids such as films and television and finally future developments are indicated.
