摘要:
Thanks to the computer, our experimental work is now free of errors. Free at last. Can it really be so? A measurement without error is like a painting without a frame. It might be a great picture, but you wouldn’t hang it in your living room.

摘要:
We stress the importance of a hands-on component in intermediate-level physics instruction. The place of model building in mechanics is illustrated by studying planar motion using complex numbers instead of vectors. A related minilab is described and analyzed.

摘要:
When taking your temperature, the physics of the thermometer is not high in your thoughts. But on a happier day it gets intriguing, and one question leads to another. Why is it the only thermometer that has to be shaken down before use? Why is it so hard to see the top end of the mercury column and get a reading?

摘要:
This note outlines the theory regarding the position and velocity associated with the 100-m dash. The theory is applied to data produced by world-class sprinters as well as students with little formal training in sprinting. Inexpensive computer software is used to analyze the data to verify the outcome of these races so as to comment on the accuracy of the theory.

摘要:
Mars Global Surveyor arrived at Mars on 11 September 1997. For approximately the first four months the spacecraft undergoes “aerobraking.” Aerobraking consists of dipping into Mars’ atmosphere to lower the spacecraft’s orbit. This article presents the aerobraking process as a classroom activity.

摘要:
The use of the Global Positioning System is becoming increasingly widespread. We present the results of a study in which simple experimental techniques and statistical analysis were used to measure the accuracy of a Global Positioning System device.
