摘要:
There is a need for effective language therapy interventions appropriate for patients with global aphasia in the acute stage of recovery from stroke. This paper reports a feasibility study of a therapy designed for this population. The therapy program, E-VIC, is presented with the aid of a Macintosh computer. Stimuli and performance are automatically computer-monitored. Results of training with seven globally aphasic patients show that all learned to use the mouse to carry out the task, despite their severe comprehension deficit. Five of the seven patients learned to select correctly from two alternative responses by session 5, and four patients were reliably selecting the correct picture from a response field of at least 3 and as many as 12 items by the time training was terminated (5–18 sessions). A study of the efficacy of E-VIC for recovery of language function is in progress.

摘要:
Equipment for musculoskeletal testing and rehabilitation has evolved tremendously in recent years. This article presents a brief history of this evolution followed by more detailed coverage of the current state of the art. Terminology and concepts related to muscle function, muscle loading, and motor control theory are defined. The clinical relevance and application of isokinetic equipment, in particular “active” systems, are discussed. The components of an active dynamometer are described, followed by an explanation of how it is controlled. The concluding section briefly presents trends and likely future applications of active systems and related technology.

摘要:
Integrating the control of accessory devices into a wheelchair joystick can both optimize function and improve aesthetics. Although the number of commercial systems having this feature is increasing, there is still a number of joystick controllers in the field that do not provide integrated accessory device control. This paper describes the design of an add-on system that allows the user to control both the wheelchair and accessory functions using a proportional joystick controller. The mode of operation is chosen with an external switch that can be mounted at any desired location. Accessory control can include both wheelchair functions, such as power recline, and external functions, such as an environmental control unit. The design is especially well suited as a retrofit to existing wheelchair control systems. A case report of an individual with quadriplegia is presented demonstrating a successful implementation of this system.

摘要:
This article reviews the status and content of ABLEDATA, a database that indexes products useful to persons with disabilities. The various methods of accessing ABLEDATA are described, including the availability of Hyper-ABLEDATA, the new desktop version of the database for Macintosh computers.
