摘要:
Urjagram literally means an “energy village” (urjais energy andgramis village). The Urjagram programme is aimed at harnessing the locally available renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar and wind in an integrated way at the village level. The energy produced through these sources will be utilised for such end-uses as cooking, lighting, agriculture and cottage industries in the villages. In India, 244 urjagram programmes have been established in 17 states and 168 were under progress by the end of December 1996. Under the evaluation for appraising the study undertaken, 15 urjagrams were covered in India. They comprised four villages in the state of Uttar Pradesh, three each in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, two in Haryana, and one each in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir. The dissemination of renewable energy technologies was undertaken with involvement of local institutions and state nodal agencies. Periodic monitoring and inspection was conducted by the regional offices of the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources. The study indicated that the duration of implementation for completed urjagrams varied from one to 24 months. The functionality of solar devices was higher (67%) than other technologies. Most of the successful programmes can be attributed to the people's involvement in the management and participation in implementation of the technologies.

摘要:
A comparison of a few resource-technology combinations suitable for decentralised power generation in rural areas from the view point of the unit cost of electricity produced has been undertaken. The cost of the extension of grid electricity to rural areas has also been compared with the cost of decentralised power generation using renewable sources of energy. In several situations the decentralised power generation using renewables has been found to be cost effective.

This paper presents the validation of the Perez inclined irradiance and illuminance models for Hong Kong using three-year (1996–1998) measured data. The simplified circumsolar (α = 25°) and point source versions using the local coefficients and those given by Perez have been assessed. A statistical analysis of the Perez models has shown that predictions for solar irradiance provide more accurate results than daylight illuminance. All versions tend to have less statistical errors for shaded vertical surfaces. For both vertical solar irradiance and daylight illuminance estimations, the circumsolar (α = 25°) version produces the largest errors when using coefficients proposed by Perez but it shows the best performance when local coefficients are fitted. It may suggest that the large number of empirical coefficients used in the Perez models make them site-specific.

Combustion studies on the use of vegetable oils as diesel fuel substitute were carried out. The use of neat vegetable oil in diesel engines presents some problems due to their chemical structure. High viscosity appears to be a fundamental property related to many problems associated with direct use of plant fuels in diesel engines. High viscosity has the effect of increasing droplet size on fuel injection. This results in poor combustion. The purpose of this research work was to evaluate the effect of elevating fuel inlet temperature on viscosity and the performance of rapeseed oil in a modern, unmodified diesel engine under part-load test conditions. The overall test results showed that fuel heating improved the combustion characteristics of rapeseed oil fuel. The brake specific fuel consumption (b.s.f.c.) was reduced and brake thermal efficiency was significantly increased compared to the baseline test on diesel fuel. For the three quarter-load operation, the high combustion temperature becomes the dominant factor on the performance of plant oil fuels, making both heated and unheated fuel acquire the same system temperature before fuel injection. The combustion chamber was free of abnormal carbon deposit though the lubricating oil test showed reduction in viscosity.

摘要:
This paper presents a state-of-the-art study on sensible thermal storage options. Various thermal models for rockbed storage system are reviewed and relevant studies on the performances of rockbed storage systems are presented. It is found that the rockbed storage system is more suitable for solar space conditioning and the collection/storage option for solar energy applications. Further work on system parameters and a comparative assessment of the rockbed storage sytem should be carried out in this direction.
